Wolves

No one is ever going to admit to looking ahead in public, but everyone associated with Wolves Football Club has to have one eye on the end of the season. They need something miraculous to happen over the next four months to avoid being a Championship club in August and that means the board are willing to accept offers on some of the 'bigger names' in the squad.

Manager Rob Edwards has not taken over as manager to give up on the Premier League, but the FA Cup is perhaps more important to Wolves in the weeks and months ahead. The side are bottom of the Premier League table and 14 points from safety and that despite the recent improvement in top flight form. They have a 1-1-8 record at Molineux in the top flight where Wolves have managed just 10 goals all season.

Wolves are unbeaten in the last 4 games in all competitions and have picked up 5 points from a possible 9 in the Premier League, while thumping Shrewsbury Town 6-1 at Molineux in the FA Cup Third Round. That victory follows on from the last Premier League game played here which ended in Wolves beating West Ham United 3-0.

Emmanuel Agbadou is back from the African Cup of Nations, but Toti, Marshall Munetsi and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde are expected to miss out.

Newcastle United

There were some elements of fatigue that contributed to the final result, but Newcastle United were also guilty of missed chances as their grip on the League Cup was loosened on Tuesday. The scheduling of this Premier League fixture suits Eddie Howe and his players, although the remainder of January is very busy with Newcastle United involved in four different competitions.

A recent return to form in the Premier League has helped push Newcastle United back up into 6th place in the standings and they are only 3 points out of the top four places. A third year in four playing Champions League Football would help Newcastle United open up some financial options as they look to continue to grow the squad and finishing in the top five for a second year in a row should be good enough to do that. The Magpies will note that they need to improve the 2-3-5 away record if they are going to push for another year amongst the elite of European Football.

Newcastle United have won 3 Premier League games in a row, but needed Penalties to beat Bournemouth in the FA Cup Third Round and were then beaten 0-2 at home by Manchester City in the League Cup Semi Final First Leg. Both of those results were at St James' Park, but they travel to Molineux knowing Newcastle United have won half of the last 4 away League fixtures played.

Dan Burn and William Osula are still pushing to return before the end of the month, but Tino Livramento and Fabian Schar are longer term absentees. Jacob Murphy picked up a knock on Tuesday and is considered a doubt.

Head to Head

Newcastle United beat Wolves 1-0 at home in September.

They scored twice in the last 15 minutes to win 1-2 at Molineux last season and Newcastle United are unbeaten in 3 visits to this ground.

However, they had not won any of 6 away games at Wolves before turning the fixture around last season.

Prediction

There is no doubting that the recent Wolves results and performances have been much better than what they have produced for much of the campaign, but this is still a team destined for the drop.

A couple of little things have gone in their favour to produce a 3 game unbeaten run in the top flight, but Rob Edwards is not going to be expecting Newcastle United to arrive here ready to be rolled over.

The Magpies will be disappointed with the final result in the League Cup Semi Final First Leg, but that was a game played on Tuesday and the players will have been given a bit of a rest before this fixture. This should allow Eddie Howe to pick a strong team, even if the squad is stretched in some areas, and with Champions League Football resuming this week.

Away form has been a disappointment this season, but Newcastle United look to be getting things right having won 2 of the last 4 away Premier League games played. They were beaten 1-0 at both Sunderland and Manchester United in that time, but only the defeat to their North East rivals would have been considered a sub-par performance.

Newcastle United have pace and quality in the final third that is going to test this Wolves team more than Manchester United, West Ham United and Everton have done in recent League fixtures.

They also snapped a long run without a win at Molineux by scoring twice here last season and Newcastle United still have enough about them to make sure they pick up three points.

Much like they had to in wins over Everton and Burnley in away games played over the last month, Newcastle United will likely need to score twice in any victory they can put together and that looks the best way to back the visitors to bounce back from a League Cup Semi Final defeat during the week.
