Burnley v Tottenham Hotspur
Football: English Premier League
Saturday 24th January 2025 - Kick Off 3pm

Burnley

Scott Parker will be pleased with the determination and work effort produced by his Burnley team in the 1-1 draw at Anfield, although they did need a wasteful display from the home team to help in earning that valuable point. However, it has been the case for a little while that Burnley need to turn draws into wins if they are going to earn another season in the Premier League at the end of this campaign.

Another point on the board has left Burnley in 19th place in the Premier League table and with an 8 point gap to 17th place and safety. Improving the 2-3-6 home record is hugely important for Burnley who have scored 10 goals and conceded 15 in those matches.

Burnley are unbeaten in 3 games in all competitions, but the sole win in that run came in the FA Cup against lower League opposition and this is a team that have not won any of 13 Premier League games played. After fighting back for a 2-2 draw with Manchester United in the last League game at Turf Moor, Burnley have lost 1 of the last 4 at home in all competitions.

Both Joe Worrall and Zian Flemming are hoping to be passed fit.

Tottenham Hotspur

Some reports have suggested that the Tottenham Hotspur board are now split in their support for Thomas Frank as manager, but a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League has eased some of the pressure. It was a very good performance from Thomas Frank's team, which will be encouraging for the manager, but the fans will want to see some consistency from the team.

Progress in the Champions League is secured, but Tottenham Hotspur will likely be fighting it out for a top eight finish in that competition on Match Day 8. However, it has been a different story in the Premier League with Spurs down in 14th place in the standings thanks to a poor home record. The side have a 5-3-3 away record in the top flight and Tottenham Hotspur have one of the stronger records on their travels in the Division.

Tottenham Hotspur had not only failed to win any of the last 5 games in all competitions, but they had lost 3 in a row before the 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund. Despite having one of the stronger away records in the Premier League, Spurs have won 1 of the last 8 away games in all competitions.

Ben Davies picked up a serious injury last week that will rule him out for months, but Joao Palhinha is hoping to be a part of the travelling squad. Players like Micky van de Ven, Conor Gallagher and Mathys Tel were not available in the Champions League, but will be pushing for returns.

Head to Head

Tottenham Hotspur beat Burnley 3-0 at home earlier this season.

They have won on 3 of the last 4 visits to Turf Moor, although the exception was a Burnley victory.

Prediction

There is no doubt that Tottenham Hotspur have a squad that has been stretched by injury, but the supporters are not going to allow that to be used as an excuse for recent performances.

They have been holding Thomas Frank to account and there is a real sense of tension towards the manager.

Thomas Frank believes in the work he is doing and the 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund will have given the entire squad a boost, although the players have to continue to dig deep without several key players.

At least this weekend there are a number of players available that were not able to play on Tuesday and Dominic Solanke scoring will have been a huge boost.

Even then, this is going to be another tough test for Tottenham Hotspur against a Burnley team that have just shown some resiliency in recent games. A run of 3 without a defeat will have given Scott Parker's team some momentum, while Burnley have only lost 1 of the last 4 games played at Turf Moor.

However, Burnley need to start winning games and this is a team that have struggled to create Big Chances, which leaves them vulnerable in games.

Tottenham Hotspur have won 1 of the last 8 away games in all competitions, but they have been working through a difficult schedule and that has to be acknowledged. During that time, they have won at Crystal Palace and drawn at Brentford, while only being undone by a late goal at the Vitality Stadium, and Tottenham Hotspur may feel they have just enough quality to find a way to win here.

There are clear indicators that suggest Tottenham Hotspur are still performing with more effectiveness away from home and that could be the case again as they look to build on the win over Borussia Dortmund.

At odds against, Spurs may be the right side to back in this one as they likely find a way to secure a narrow victory.
