Koln remain in a precarious spot in the Bundesliga, just one point clear of Wolfsburg. Last week’s 2-1 defeat to SC Freiburg extended their poor run: only one win (against Mainz) in their last nine Bundesliga matches, with six defeats.

They have been involved in high-scoring games lately, with over 2.5 goals in each of their last four fixtures.

At home, they beat Mainz 2-1 in their most recent game, but had been winless in four prior home matches, losing three.

15 games remain until the end of the season, and Koln needs about 15 points to survive. Can they do it? It looks likely, but now they are entering a very difficult stretch.

After Wolfsburg, four of their next five opponents are teams from the top 5 on the table (RB Leipzig, VfB Stuttgart, TSG Hoffenheim, and Borussia Dortmund).

Wolfsburg are never able to get out of their crisis. They suffered a 3-1 loss to Mainz in the last round, despite leading at one stage.

The team has a worrying habit of dropping points after taking the lead – Wolfsburg has already squandered 18 points from winning positions this season, the most in the Bundesliga. They lost four games after taking the lead and drew three after leading.

Defensively, Wolfsburg are poor, conceding 41 goals in 19 games, the second-worst record in the Bundesliga. Recent matches have seen plenty of goals, with 3+ goals in 6 of their last 7 Bundesliga games.

And another worrying stat – 19 points after 19 games is Wolfsburg’s worst record at this stage of the season.

To refresh your memory, Wolfsburg also had 19 points from 19 games in the 2016/17 Bundesliga season, when they played relegation playoff matches against Eintracht Braunschweig and barely survived in the Bundesliga.

The Betting Verdict

Previous meetings suggest an entertaining clash – all of the last three duels between the sides saw both teams scoring. Their first duel this season was a memorable one, ending in a 3-3 draw, with Koln battling back from a goal down twice.

Overall, Wolfsburg have the edge in the head-to-head, with 17 wins in 37 Bundesliga encounters, though Koln have struggled at home against the Wolves, not winning against them since January 2020.

Both teams’ recent goal-rich form and poor defending hint at another high-scoring match.

The unstable form and many uncertainties surrounding the teams prevent me from backing either side, so I would rather go with both teams to score as the most realistic outcome of the match, at fair odds.
