Manchester United
You can imagine one or two 'pundits' would have been ready to be pretty scathing about Michael Carrick and Manchester United after they blew a 2-0 lead against Fulham. Up stepped Benjamin Sesko deep into injury time to keep the wolves from the door with a late winning goal that secured Manchester United three important League points and also maintained the 100% start under Carrick since he took over as interim manager.
On a weekend where Champions League chasing rivals Liverpool and Chelsea both won, Manchester United showed some real character to get the better of Fulham at Old Trafford to remain inside the top four in the Premier League standings. Now there may be some focus in dragging back the two teams immediately above Manchester United, although the players will be reminded to focus on improving the 7-3-2 record at Old Trafford.
Manchester United have been beaten in the FA Cup Third Round, but they are unbeaten in 7 Premier League games and have won 3 in a row. The victory over Fulham last Sunday means Manchester United have won 3 of the last 4 Premier League games at Old Trafford.
Mason Mount was surprisingly absent last weekend, but is hoping to be available sooner rather than later. Both Matthijs de Ligt and Patrick Dorgu are out.
Tottenham Hotspur
Thomas Frank may still not have earned the backing of the Tottenham Hotspur fans, but there has to be a respect for the crisis the manager is dealing with. Even Captain Cristian Romero has made his frustration clear that a squad that has been completely decimated by injury was not helped in the January transfer window and Tottenham Hotspur will have to find a way through the stormy waters.
They have Qualified for the Last 16 in the Champions League and Tottenham Hotspur showed tremendous character to earn a 2-2 draw with Manchester City last Sunday, but that has left them in 14th place in the Premier League table. The Thomas Frank tactics have worked best away from home where Spurs have a 5-4-3 record in the top flight having scored 20 goals and conceded 17 in those matches.
Tottenham Hotspur lost 3 games in a row in all competitions in the middle of last month, but the players have rallied for the under pressure manager and they will travel to the North West unbeaten in 4 games. The side have not won any of the last 3 away Premier League games, but Tottenham Hotspur have only been beaten in 1 of the last 5 on their travels in all competitions.
Cristian Romero was battling an illness last week and should be available, while Micky van de Ven and Dominic Solanke are hoping to shake off knocks. The same can be said for Djed Spence, but Thomas Frank is going to be miss a huge number of important players.
Head to Head
These two teams played out an entertaining, topsy-turvy clash in North London in November that ended 2-2.
Tottenham Hotspur won all 4 games against Manchester United last season and they are now unbeaten in 8 against this opponent.
In the last match between these clubs at Old Trafford, Erik ten Hag was facing Ange Postecoglou in the dugout as Spurs won 0-3 here in September 2024.
Prediction
The last time Tottenham Hotspur missed out on European Football, they decided to change the manager.
Even winning the Europa League did not save Ange Postecoglou at the end of last season and Tottenham Hotspur are likely going to need to win another European trophy if they are going to be participating in a UEFA run competition next season.
They have made it through to the Last 16 of the Champions League, but Spurs look short of the quality needed to win that competition.
It really has not helped that the squad have been decimated by injury throughout the course of the campaign, although that may not be an excuse that will keep Thomas Frank in charge of the club. The players are clearly performing for the manager, but the supporters have long made their feelings clear about Frank and that is going to be hard for the board to ignore if Spurs finish in the bottom half of the Premier League table again.
Last Sunday they showed plenty of character to recover from 0-2 behind to earn a draw with Manchester City, while Thomas Frank can set the team up very differently away from home this weekend. Fans may not like it, but Spurs have proven to be tough to beat on their travels by sitting in and trying to counter and that can be a successful way to attack Manchester United.
However, it is going to be a real challenge for a squad that is stretched by injury and not having a huge depth from the bench.
This weekend they are travelling to a confident Manchester United who scored a late goal to make it 3 wins in a row under Michael Carrick. The players are very comfortable with what is being asked of them and the Manchester United options are much stronger from the bench if they need to change the game.
Of course you cannot ignore the run of 8 games without a win against Tottenham Hotspur, but Manchester United perhaps deserved to end that run when the teams met in North London in November.
All of the attacking players have scored since Michael Carrick took over and Bruno Fernandes looks much more comfortable being pushed out of the midfield.
The performances have been impressive overall and this looks like the perfect time to end the winless run against Tottenham Hotspur.
Credit has to be given to Tottenham Hotspur for some of the chances they have been creating in recent games, but defensively there have been some major problems to address and those may have to wait until key players return to fitness. Thomas Frank will want his team to be organised and to frustrate the hosts, but it may be too tough to do that for the entire ninety minutes and a confident Manchester United can score at least twice on the way to another three points.
