Chelsea
The exit in the League Cup Semi Final will have hurt, but the criticism of the manager and his tactics seemed far over the top. Liam Rosenior is not giving that criticism much oxygen and instead is focused on keeping Chelsea motoring in the right direction, while building on the bounce back victory at Molineux this past weekend.
Winning trophies is always going to be a big part of whether a manager is seen as a success or failure at Chelsea Football Club, but the current status means another season in the Champions League is the aim through the Premier League finish. The Blues are 5th in the current standings and they are only a point behind Manchester United in the top four, while they have a 6-3-3 record at Stamford Bridge in the top flight.
Chelsea have won 7 of the 9 games played in all competitions under Liam Rosenior with the exceptions both being defeats in the League Cup Semi Final. They were beaten in that first game at Stamford Bridge against Arsenal, but Chelsea have bounced back with 3 straight wins at home in all competitions.
Reece James and Tosin Adarabioyo are both doubts, while Jamie Gittens is not expected back until potentially after the March international break. The manager has been rotating his players, but the relative comfort of winning at Molineux has allowed Rosenior to bring off key players like hat-trick hero Cole Palmer so they can start on Tuesday.
Leeds United
An improving West Ham United have just dragged back a number of rivals in the Premier League relegation battle and that includes Leeds United. Daniel Farke would have recognised the importance of the Premier League game last Friday and he will have been very happy with the performance of the players in beating Nottingham Forest 3-1 at Elland Road.
Once again West Ham United responded though and that means Leeds United are still only 6 points clear of the relegation zone after results this past weekend. The two teams immediately below Leeds United are both hosting in this midweek round of fixtures, while Farke's squad travel to West London with a 1-4-7 away record in the top flight.
Leeds United have lost 1 of the last 5 games in all competitions and the squad have picked up some momentum having won 3 of those fixtures. The side may not have won any of the last 9 away Premier League games, but credit has to be given to Leeds United for earning draws in 4 of the last 5 fixtures played on their travels in this Division to maintain some kind of gap to the relegation zone.
Pascal Struijk and Anton Stach are expected to miss out, but should be available when the Premier League resumes later this month. Both Ilia Gruev and Dominic Calvert-Lewin played inspirational parts in the win over Nottingham Forest and are hoping to overcome injury and illness respectively to travel with the squad.
Head to Head
Leeds United were looking in trouble at the beginning of December, but the 3-1 home win over Chelsea has sparked an upturn in form.
Two seasons ago they were beaten in the FA Cup Quarter Final at Stamford Bridge thanks to an injury time winner for Chelsea (3-2).
That result does mean Chelsea have won 7 in a row at home against Leeds United in all competitions.
Prediction
This should be a decent watch for the neutral on Tuesday evening with both Chelsea and Leeds United looking positive going forward, but perhaps not the most convincing at the back.
It is an important game for both teams chasing different ambitions at the top and bottom of the Premier League, but both have been in decent form over the last few weeks.
With that said, it is perhaps going to be a tougher game for Chelsea than fans would expect when hosting a team that is 16th in the Premier League table.
Yes, Leeds United were thumped 0-4 at home by Arsenal, but since the 3-1 win over Chelsea at Elland Road in early December, Daniel Farke's team have been very, very competitive far more often than not. Even what looks to be a weak away record on paper has a different feel when noting that Leeds United have drawn 4 of the last 5 away Premier League games and played well at the likes of Sunderland and Brentford in that time.
They even held Liverpool at Anfield, although Leeds United rode their luck at times in that one.
Giving up those quality of chances would be a problem at Chelsea considering the amount of goals Liam Rosenior's team have been scoring since the manager took over last month. They even managed to score twice against a rock solid Arsenal defence, while the three goals scored at Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday means Chelsea have hit that mark in 4 of the last 5 games in all competitions.
We have yet to really hear any real positives about Liam Rosenior, but that recent record deserves more respect and the players are clearly enjoying playing for him a little more than Enzo Maresca.
Cole Palmer is a huge return for Chelsea and his hat-trick on Saturday will have done him the world of good.
The anticipation is that Leeds United will play their part, but Chelsea may have the firepower to secure a vital three points here.
