Tottenham Hotspur
Thomas Frank currently retains the support of the board, but he is going to need the fans to get behind his Tottenham Hotspur team and help them pull away from the growing relegation threat behind them. A host of injuries have not helped, but Frank has to be incredibly let down by Cristian Romero after another sending off this past weekend, which ultimately made the task impossible for Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.
The poor run of form has seen Tottenham Hotspur slump back into 15th place in the Premier League table and they are now just 6 points clear of West Ham United in the bottom three. Earning a place back in European Football is likely going to be dependent on Spurs winning the Champions League, but the focus for now is putting some distance between themselves and a drop into the Championship.
Tottenham Hotspur have not won in the Premier League since the end of December and have earned 4 points from a possible 21 in that time. They have won a couple of Champions League games, which have earned them a spot in the Last 16 of that competition, but Tottenham Hotspur have incredibly won just 1 of the last 11 home games against English opposition in all competitions.
Cristian Romero begins a four game suspension, while Destiny Udogie is the latest player to go down with an injury that rules him out for around a month. Djed Spence is back this week, but Spurs are still without a host of important players with the likes of Pedro Porro and Richarlison closest to a return.
Newcastle United
It would have come as a slight surprise that Newcastle United were booed off in the 2-3 home defeat to Brentford on Saturday, but Eddie Howe remains defiant that he is the best man to guide this time back into a positive run of form. The squad has been stretched by a heavy schedule and injury, but fans do not have the patience for excuses as Newcastle United flounder in the top flight.
The latest defeat has seen Newcastle United slip into 12th place in the Premier League table and a return to the Champions League looks very unlikely. On current form there is every chance that Newcastle United will need to win either the Champions League or the FA Cup to be playing in Europe next season and they travel to London with a 2-4-6 away record.
Newcastle United have won just 1 of the last 9 games in all competitions in normal time since scoring very deep into injury time in the 4-3 home victory over Leeds United. Most concerning is that they have lost 4 of the last 5 games in all competitions after the 2-3 home loss to Brentford this past Saturday. After battling to a 1-1 draw at Paris Saint-Germain, Newcastle United have been thumped at both Liverpool and Manchester City in consecutive away fixtures.
Lewis Miley and Anthony Gordon may travel, but remain doubtful, while Joelinton is expected to miss out.
Head to Head
Newcastle United beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at home in the League Cup, but they could not hold onto leads on two occasions in the eventual 2-2 draw with them in the Premier League.
The last 4 games hosted by Spurs have seen both teams win twice- the most recent saw Newcastle United come from a goal behind to win 1-2 here.
Prediction
What can you about these two English Premier League clubs who are both competing in the Champions League this season?
To say Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have been big disappointments in the Premier League may not quite capture the mood within the fanbase.
Thomas Frank and Eddie Howe have heard plenty of criticism both inside the Stadium and outside and being booed off is something the players have had to endure.
On Saturday both Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United suffered disappointing League defeats- the former are already stretched through injury so having to play an hour with ten men after Cristian Romero's sending off has to be the worst case scenario they could have imagined.
The visiting team have shown plenty of fatigue of their own as Newcastle United continue to have to play every few days without being able to rotate players as they would like. Anthony Gordon's injury has hurt the options available and Newcastle United looked plenty fatigued in recent games against Liverpool, Manchester City and Brentford which have all ended in defeat.
In all of those Newcastle United have conceded at least three times, but it is hard to make a case for Tottenham Hotspur to exploit The Magpies considering how decimated the squad is through injury and suspension.
It also should be noted that Tottenham Hotspur have struggled at home for months- they have won 1 of the last 11 home games against an English opponent with the successes being in the Champions League.
This honestly feels like a game that could go wrong for either team really quickly and that makes it really tough to call.
They did share out the points when meeting in the North East and that has every chance of being the outcome of this fixture as well. Neither will be playing with any confidence to hold onto a lead and ultimately a point apiece may be the outcome, which may not do a lot to appease either fanbase afterwards.
