Some reports suggested West Ham United were ready to make a change from Nuno Espirito Santo as manager just last month following a 1-2 home defeat to relegation rivals Nottingham Forest. The board still went out and made some significant investment in the January transfer window, while that result seemed to spark the players who have put some very important performances together.

It was a big weekend for West Ham United who were able to win at Turf Moor and move to within 3 points of Nottingham Forest outside of the relegation zone. The Hammers have a 3-1-8 record at the London Stadium and will be playing before Nottingham Forest this midweek, but would need to win by at least a four goal margin to move out of the bottom three before Sean Dyche's team play.

West Ham United have progressed in the FA Cup following that home loss to Nottingham Forest, but most importantly they have won 3 of the last 4 Premier League games played. The exception is the 3-2 defeat at Chelsea in a game that West Ham United led 0-2, while the players should have taken a lot of confidence from the 3-1 home win over Sunderland in the last Premier League game played in East London.

Jean-Clair Todibo continues to serve his suspension. The manager has indicated there are a number of concerns within his squad, but refused to elaborate further as to who and how many he was talking about.

Manchester United

A couple of late goals and perhaps some refereeing decisions that have gone in the right way have helped Manchester United put together a really good run, but they have been better than fortunate under Michael Carrick. Yes, there has been some fortune landing the right way, but there has been a lot of good football produced by Manchester United and the results have reflected the performances.

The side head back to London where Manchester United beat Arsenal a couple of weeks ago and Carrick has helped the team move into 4th place and with Champions League qualification a real ambition. They have a 4-5-3 away record and Manchester United have scored and conceded 21 goals in those matches.

Manchester United were dumped out of the FA Cup Third Round by Brighton just prior to announcing Michael Carrick as interim manager for the remainder of the campaign. That announcement has sparked a run of 4 consecutive Premier League victories, including beating the current top two in the Division in back to back weeks. Manchester United have lost 1 of the last 9 away Premier League games played and have won 4 times in that run.

Both Matthijs de Ligt and Mason Mount are hoping to be available when the Premier League resumes in two weeks time, but will not travel. Patrick Dorgu will be pushing to return before the March international break, but is most likely available in April.

Head to Head

Prediction

The fixture at the London Stadium features two teams in very strong form and that should mean a relatively entertaining affair.

Both West Ham United and Manchester United have put some strong results together and that has pushed them into a position to achieve the ambitions that would have been set out this past month.

For West Ham United that means avoiding relegation and 3 Premier League wins in 4 games makes them worthy of respect. The wins have been against teams in and around them like Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley, but West Ham United have also convincingly beaten Sunderland in the last League game here and were leading 0-2 at Stamford Bridge before the second half collapse.

Nuno Espirito Santo has clearly gotten the players buying into his plans and some of the January investment has made West Ham United look capable of climbing out of the bottom three.

There is no ignoring of the form guide, but Manchester United will arrive in East London in even better recent form.

Michael Carrick has led his team to 4 consecutive Premier League wins and Manchester United have impressed by beating the current top two, as well as Fulham and Spurs. The majority of the wins have been at Old Trafford, but the 2-3 win at the Emirates Stadium will have given Manchester United a huge boost in confidence, while the away form has been strong even while being guided by Ruben Amorim.

A single loss in 9 away Premier Leagues means Manchester United will be travelling filled with belief, although they have won less than half of those fixtures.

The interim manager has just taken the handbrake off of the team though and Manchester United have scored 10 goals in the four wins, which makes them dangerous. Players like Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Amad are being played in by Bruno Fernandes, who is operating much higher up the pitch, while the team look a bit more solid defensively.

Recent games at the London Stadium have ended poorly for Manchester United, but they can snap that run by picking up another three points.

Both teams should create chances and it could be an entertaining game for the neutral, but the quality not only of the Manchester United starters, but those coming off the bench, may give them the edge.

With almost two weeks between games, Manchester United can put it all on the pitch and they can win a fixture in which they score at least twice as they keep the pressure up on the top four chasing rivals.
