Wolves
The conditions had created a quagmire of a playing surface and everyone associated with Wolves Football Club would have been incredibly concerned about the makings of a FA Cup exit. They had a tough test at Blundell Park, where Manchester United were beaten in the League Cup Second Round back in August, but Wolves came through to earn a narrow 0-1 win over Grimsby Town and progress into the Fifth Round of the competition.
Rob Edwards picked a strong team for that tie, despite this Premier League game being moved forward from March after the opponent made it through to the League Cup Final. He is looking for Wolves to pick up some momentum, while the side are 20th in the Premier League table and 18 points from safety, which means Wolves can take the Cup more seriously than most. They have a 1-2-10 record at Molineux in the Premier League and Wolves still need 3 more points to avoid finishing with the lowest point tally in top flight history.
Wolves have not won any of the 5 Premier League games played between the FA Cup Third Round and Fourth Round successes over lower League opponents. They did snap a 3 game losing run when holding Nottingham Forest to a goalless draw at the City Ground last week. After putting together a 3 game unbeaten run at Molineux, Wolves have suffered consecutive defeats here against Bournemouth and Chelsea.
Andre returned to action on Sunday, but Hee-Chan Hwang is set to miss out through the remainder of the month.
Arsenal
The players and manager downplayed the dropped points against Brentford in the Premier League last Thursday and Arsenal retain control of the destiny of the Championship. This fixture has been moved forward from March and it certainly gives Arsenal a chance to build pressure on their main title rivals by extending the lead at the top of the Division before the next full round of fixtures are set to be played.
Despite the draw at the Gtech Community Stadium, Arsenal are 4 points clear of Manchester City in the Premier League title race and there are now just twelve League games left to play. All the concentration has to be on improving the 7-4-2 away record in the top flight, even if Arsenal do have the North London derby coming up this weekend.
Arsenal crushed Wigan Athletic at home in the FA Cup Fourth Round on Sunday and they have won 5 of the last 6 games in all competitions since the surprising 2-3 home defeat to Manchester United. They have won 7 of the last 9 away games in all competitions, although it should be noted that the 1-1 draw at Brentford means Arsenal have drawn 2 of the last 3 away Premier League fixtures played.
Riccardo Calafiori is the latest Arsenal player who picked up an injury in the warm up for a fixture he has been selected to start and he is a doubt. Both Ben White and Martin Odegaard are expected to travel, but Kai Havertz is out. William Saliba had an illness last week, but was back in action on Sunday and will restore his partnership with Gabriel.
Head to Head
It was Wolves who scored all three goals in the game at the Emirates Stadium in December, but it sums up their season that they still lost 2-1.
Arsenal have won on each of the last 4 visits to Molineux.
Prediction
There will have been some negative feelings in the immediate aftermath of the 1-1 draw at Brentford, but Arsenal fans should have felt much different in the cold light of day.
It may have felt like two dropped points, but no one is going to have it easy at the Gtech Community Stadium and Arsenal have been able to get another tough obstacle out of the way.
Most importantly, they remain 4 points clear of Manchester City and with control of the Premier League title still within their own grasp.
This may be the ideal opponent for Arsenal to just relieve any tension that the supporters are feeling ahead of the North London derby on Sunday.
Wolves made it through to the FA Cup Fifth Round on Sunday, as did Arsenal, but Rob Edwards had to use key players on a horrible playing surface. It would have been a much more energy sapping day than the Arsenal players faced and Wolves have just lost their way in the Premier League after an upturn of form at the end of December that moved into the New Year.
The manager will be pleased with the goalless draw at Nottingham Forest, but Wolves were very fortunate on the day for some wasteful finishing from an opponent that Sacked Sean Dyche hours later.
That has not been the case in the last couple of Premier League games at Molineux which have ended in defeat to Bournemouth and Chelsea in relative comfort.
Rob Edwards had set his team up to offer a bit more resistance in recent weeks, but that not been the case in the last few Premier League fixtures. Even Grimsby Town offered a genuine threat in the final third and this Arsenal team have been a little more creative on their travels in recent outings with the Brentford fixture being an exception to the rule.
In recent seasons, Arsenal have been comfortable visiting Molineux and that should be the case again- backing them to win to nil is a slightly stronger price than covering the Asian Handicap line, but the feeling is that The Gunners will have too much in the final third for the hosts and there is every chance they are in a position to cover even if in danger of conceding late.
Chelsea were 0-3 ahead when conceding at Molineux and Arsenal may make changes if in a commanding lead with the Tottenham Hotspur fixture in mind, which could see them lose some rhythm late in the game.
With all that being said, a 0-2 scoreline looks like it could be a big runner in this match and backing Arsenal to win by at least two goals feels the 'safer' approach to take.
