January 2025 was the time of the year when Paris Saint-Germain clicked and they were able to roll through the Champions League Knock Out Rounds after winning a couple of late Group matches to avoid a shocking elimination. Monaco

The First Leg of the Champions League Knock Out Play Off Round could not have started any better for Monaco who took the lead inside the first minute of the game and were 2-0 ahead of Paris Saint-Germain with 18 minutes on the clock. However, things spiralled from there and Monaco's home defeat makes them a big underdog against the long-time dominant club in France.

They are 8th in the French top flight and Monaco's 10 points in the Champions League were only good enough for 21st place in the final League Phase standings. This meant a tough Knock Out tie was going to have to be played and Monaco can take little encouragement from the 1-1-2 away record produced in the competition having conceded 12 goals in those matches.

Monaco have won 2 of the last 3 games played in all competitions, but a deeper look at the form guide shows they have won just 3 of the last 10 as they have struggled for consistency. They did beat Lens 2-3 away from this past weekend, which knocked Lens off of top spot in the Division, and that big result also ended a run of 4 away games without a victory.

Aleksandr Golovin was sent off early in the second half last week and will serve a suspension, while Monaco's squad is stretched through injury.

Monaco have beaten Paris Saint-Germain at home in the French top flight this season before the First Leg defeat last week.

Prediction

The removal of the 'away goals rule' means this tie is not over just yet, but all of the momentum is on the side of Paris Saint-Germain after fighting back from 2-0 behind to win 2-3 in Monaco last week.

Now they get to host at a ground where Paris Saint-Germain have been winning a lot of football matches, including a convincing 3-0 win over Metz last time out.

The familiarity of the teams to one another does make it a little more difficult for Paris Saint-Germain, but they showed twelve months ago against Brest that they can impose their quality over domestic rivals on the European stage.

Paris Saint-Germain will have a lot of respect for the fact that Monaco just beat then League leaders Lens 2-3 away from this past weekend.

This should be a result that just keeps the home team focused and ultimately look to try and put the result beyond Monaco way before the final whistle is blown on the tie.
