Wolves v Aston Villa
Football: English Premier League
Friday 27th February 2026 - Kick Off 8pm
This game is live on TV

Wolves

A missed Penalty was eventually followed by a late body blow as Wolves were unable to tick off another Premier League point last Sunday at Selhurst Park. For a long time it has been a matter of when Wolves were confirmed as being relegated rather than if and the loss last week means the process has just moved on another week with the team still chasing two more points to avoid finishing with the lowest tally in Premier League history.

After results last weekend, Wolves are bottom of the table and 17 points from safety with only ten Premier League games left to play. Playing spoiler for others should still be something of a motivator for a young group who will be trying to show Rob Edwards that they can help Wolves in the drop down to the Championship. The side open this Premier League weekend at home where Wolves have a 1-3-10 record in the top flight.

Wolves fought back from 0-2 down to earn a 2-2 draw with Premier League leaders Arsenal in the last fixture here, but they have lost 4 of the last 6 top flight games overall. They had been beaten by Bournemouth and Chelsea prior to the fightback against Arsenal, but that last result does mean Wolves have lost just 2 of the last 6 at Molineux in all competitions.

Hee-Chan Hwang is expected to miss out, but could return for the next Premier League game.

Aston Villa

A late goal earned Aston Villa a deserved point at home against Leeds United last weekend, but Unai Emery and the fans would have expected more from the team. The likes of Manchester United and Liverpool took advantage of that slip and the fight to earn a place in the Champions League for next season is going to be heating up, even with an expected additional place for 5th place.

The Villans are still 3rd in the Premier League table, but they are now just 6 points ahead of Liverpool in 6th place and an inconsistent run will have dented some of the previous confidence. They do have a 6-4-3 away record in the Premier League and Aston Villa will want to shift some pressure onto their main Champions League chasing rivals by opening up this weekend with an important three points.

Aston Villa have won 1 of the last 5 games in all competitions and they have just been struggling in the final third with four goals scored across all of those matches. They had won 3 away games in a row in all competitions, but Aston Villa saw that run snapped in a 1-1 draw at the Vitality Stadium.

Marco Bizot is available, but injuries have decimated the options in the middle of the part with the likes of Boubacar Kamara and Youri Tielemens longer term absentees. John McGinn could return soon, but this Friday looks to have come too soon for him.

Head to Head

A second half goal was enough for Aston Villa to edge past Wolves 1-0 at home at the end of November.

Recent visits to Molineux have been much tougher and Aston Villa have not won any of the last 4 here, while losing twice in that run.

Prediction

The Friday night fixture may not have much of an implication on how things will shape up at the bottom of the Premier League, but it feels like an important moment for Aston Villa and the race for Champions League Football.

Things have gotten really nervy around Villa Park and you almost have to feel that Aston Villa could prefer playing away from home.

Expectations have been raised thanks to a really strong run of form over the course of a couple of months, but the side have just struggled in recent weeks. Scoring enough goals has been the real problem for Aston Villa and that has seen them drop a few points and allow some big name clubs to gather behind them in what is ultimately likely to be a top five race for a place in the elite UEFA competition for next season.

Despite those points being dropped, Aston Villa are still in a strong position and they will certainly feel they can do enough to win at Molineux for the first time since December 2020.

Unai Emery is expected to shake things up with his team selection to just see if he can help Aston Villa bring a bit more intensity onto the field.

He will have plenty of respect for the resilience that Rob Edwards has instilled in his Wolves team, even if the quality has been lacking.

Wolves showed they can keep going in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal most recently here, but losses to Bournemouth and Chelsea and the amount of goals they are still conceding remain concerning. Relegation is inevitable, but Edwards is going to want Wolves to try and keep things tight and see if Aston Villa are as nervy as Arsenal got in that fixture in the middle of February.

While noting that Aston Villa have only scored four goals in the last 5 games in all competitions, it should be stated that Wolves have been struggling even more- they have failed to score in 5 of the last 7 Premier League games.

Being at home and playing a Midlands rival under the lights will give Wolves motivation to get forward, but it may actually suit Aston Villa and it is the away team who may just have the extra gear or two to secure an important three points.
