Brighton
A couple of big results have pushed Brighton back up the Premier League standings and they will once again be thinking about ending the campaign with European Football. It has been an inconsistent season for Fabian Hurzeler and his team, but Brighton have some momentum and head into a fixture where all of the expectation is on the opponent.
The Seagulls are now up into 13th place in the Premier League table and the 37 points on the board means they are much closer to the top seven than the bottom three. They now have a 6-6-2 record at the Amex Stadium in the Premier League after Brighton got the better of Nottingham Forest here on Sunday.
Brighton had lost 4 of 5 games in all competitions, which included being dumped out of the FA Cup, but they have arrested the slump with wins over Brentford and Nottingham Forest. The side had not won any of the previous 3 home Premier League games before the victory on Sunday, although Brighton fans may point out that they have lost 1 of the last 7 Premier League games played at the Amex Stadium.
Yasin Ayari should be involved this week.
Arsenal
Some of the criticism of the Arsenal style may bother the supporters, but Mikel Arteta has insisted the goals being scored are 'beautiful'. Most importantly for everyone associated with the club, they are winning goals as Arsenal look to just keep their noses in front of Manchester City before the teams meet in a pivotal looking Premier League game in April.
Once again The Gunners have moved 5 points clear of Manchester City following the 2-1 win over Chelsea on Sunday, although they have played a game more than their closest title challengers. All Arsenal can do is focus on their own fixtures and they do have an 8-5-2 away record ahead of this next game on the South Coast.
Arsenal have come through a couple of awkward looking fixtures by beating Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea and they have won 7 of the last 9 played in all competitions. However, prior to the comfortable win in the North London derby, Arsenal had drawn consecutive away Premier League games at Brentford and Wolves.
David Raya and Declan Rice both picked up knocks on Sunday- the former looks more likely to travel out of the two. Ben White and Martin Odegaard may also miss out, while Mikel Arteta has made it clear he may need to make some changes to freshen up the starting eleven.
Head to Head
Arsenal have beaten Brighton twice at home this season in the League Cup and Premier League.
They have won 3 of the last 5 at the Amex Stadium too, but Brighton held Arsenal to a 1-1 draw here last season.
Prediction
Some fans may feel Arsenal have overcome the two most difficult challenges left on the Premier League schedule prior to the March international break, but Mikel Arteta and the players dare not be distracted by such talk.
It was a tight, competitive game on Sunday, but one that was won by Arsenal in front of the home fans.
Others may not like it, but set pieces have been a devastating part of the game for Arsenal and it will be interesting to see what kind of impact the potential absence of Declan Rice has on their abilities. The midfielder is almost certain to miss out on Wednesday with some big games coming up this month and Arsenal cannot afford to think this is going to be an easy fixture to navigate.
Three weeks ago it may have felt 'easier', but Brighton have come out of a slump in form and have wins over Brentford and Nottingham Forest to give them some momentum. Fabian Hurzeler has made his team pretty resilient at the Amex Stadium and Brighton have given Arsenal some stiff tests in recent years, which should mean they are not underestimated.
You do have to worry about the kind of threat Arsenal will pose from set pieces, but Brighton have to believe they can get forward and cause plenty of problems of their own. This is a team that wants to play attractive, attacking football and Brighton will have noted the kind of threat Brentford posed against Arsenal and look to replicate that.
It won't be easy, but Arsenal feel short here and especially if influential Declan Rice is missing.
They are not earning as many clean sheets as earlier this season and David Raya missing out would be another blow.
At worst you have to think Brighton are competitive enough to avoid being blown away and they can be backed with a start on the Asian Handicap as they look to throw a wrench in the Arsenal title challenge for a second season in a row.
