Wolves

It has been a remarkable week for Rob Edwards and his Wolves team with the fine margins going in favour of a team that has looked destined for relegation for some time. There are even a few whisperings of a 'great escape', but those margins are going to have to stick with Wolves the remainder of this campaign as they turn their attention to the FA Cup this weekend.

Once again they will be facing Liverpool having beaten them here on Tuesday night, but this is going to be another tough test for a Wolves team that have overcome the underlying numbers. The FA Cup run has seen Wolves beat Shrewsbury Town and Grimsby Town from the lower Divisions, but a place in the Quarter Final is now in front of them if they can pull the upset over the current English Champions.

Wolves have won back to back home games against Aston Villa and Liverpool and they have now lost 1 of the last 6 games in all competitions. Despite the pressure that has been faced, Wolves are unbeaten in 3 at Molineux against current top six Premier League teams since losing to Bournemouth and Chelsea in consecutive home fixtures.

Rob Edwards may choose to freshen up his starting eleven in a couple of areas, but the FA Cup is a big competition for Wolves so a strong team will be selected.

Liverpool

Manager Arne Slot bemoaned some of the misfortune that has blighted his Liverpool team for months- once they equalised on Tuesday, Liverpool looked the more likely winners, but they continue to be punished for every mistake made at the back. That has put pressure on an inconsistent attacking unit, who had enough chances to win that Premier League fixture.

Missing out on the Champions League next season would likely spell the end of Arne Slot's time as manager of Liverpool, but his team will have bene glad to see Aston Villa and Manchester United beaten this midweek too. Finishing in the top five is a big priority for Liverpool, but they turn their attention to two Cup competitions over the next week and have already beaten Barnsley and Brighton in the FA Cup.

Liverpool had a 4 game winning run come to an end in the narrow 2-1 defeat at Molineux on Tuesday evening, but they have an opportunity to make immediate amends. Prior to that defeat, Liverpool had won away games at Sunderland and Nottingham Forest, even if the performance in the latter of those fixtures was pretty disappointing overall.

Arne Slot has been in a press conference and has admitted he will be looking to freshen up a couple of areas, although is not planning on making wholesale changes. A surprisingly strong Liverpool team was selected in the FA Cup Fourth Round win over Brighton and Slot may choose to pick key players in this one as well.

Head to Head

Both Premier League games between these teams have ended in 2-1 home wins this season.

Liverpool had won 6 in a row at Molineux, including in a FA Cup tie, before that result on Tuesday.

Prediction

The FA Cup continues to be a competition that is loved by the fans, but one that the top clubs will choose to make changes until the Quarter Final stage and beyond.

However, this Fifth Round tie feels pretty important for both Wolves and Liverpool and that could mean stronger teams that would usually be expected.

Arne Slot definitely picked a stronger eleven in the Fourth Round than most would have expected and Liverpool comfortably eased past Brighton when all was said and done. They had been in decent form prior to the loss here on Tuesday night, but you have to believe Liverpool have learned plenty from that and even a slightly higher tempo would give them a real edge.

Underlying numbers don't always tell the tale, but Wolves did create very little on Tuesday.

Liverpool did not do enough with the ball, but still had double the Big Chances compared with the hosts and that is not counting some of the very promising positions they got into before being let down by the final ball.

On another day Liverpool would have won that Premier League game and they can redeem themselves in the FA Cup Fifth Round.

Keep an eye out on team news, but at this moment it still feels like Liverpool are the right side to back with the assumption that a limited Wolves team cannot keep getting the rub of the green.

Opponents have missed some glaring chances against them and in a Cup setting Liverpool may find more spaces to exploit.
