Things have gone from bad to worse for Wolfsburg this season. After 24 Bundesliga rounds, they have collected only 20 points – the lowest tally in the club’s Bundesliga history at this stage of a campaign, and they now sit inside the bottom two for the first time in 15 years.

Form is clearly the biggest problem. Wolfsburg have lost five of their last six Bundesliga matches, including a 4-0 thrashing by VfB Stuttgart last week.

Their defense has been leaking goals regularly, conceding at least twice in each of their last four Bundesliga games. That lack of stability at the back has made it extremely difficult for them to build any momentum.

Their home form is another concern. Wolfsburg have been the worst home side in the Bundesliga so far, winning just two of their 12 matches at the Volkswagen Arena and losing seven.

Still, this fixture may offer them a small opportunity to respond, especially against an opponent that has also struggled away from home this season.

Hamburger SV

Hamburger SV arrive after a tough week in which they narrowly lost 1-2 against RB Leipzig and then fell 0-1 to Bayer Leverkusen in the rescheduled midweek fixture. They were competitive in both defeats, though, and they remain in a relatively comfortable position in the table.

The newly promoted side currently sits near mid-table and maintains a six-point cushion above the automatic relegation places, giving them a bit more breathing room than their hosts.

HSV have been much stronger at home this season, but their away results have slowly improved. After struggling on the road earlier in the campaign, they are now unbeaten in their last three Bundesliga away matches, recording two draws and one win. That small run will give them confidence heading into this trip to Wolfsburg.

The Betting Verdict

This looks like a tense match between two sides that desperately need points, but for different reasons.

Wolfsburg are under huge pressure after a terrible run of results and poor home form, while Hamburger SV are simply trying to stay clear of the relegation fight.

Wolfsburg are running out of time, and they must start picking up points badly. Next week comes TSG Hoffenheim, and they still have games where they will be huge underdogs, like with Bayer Leverkusen, SC Freiburg, Bayern Munich, and Eintracht Frankfurt.

If Wolfsburg fails to win this game, I am sure they will finish the season in the relegation zone.

The way I see it, they are likely to lose six of their final 10 games of the season, and four wins from here on out would not be enough for survival. Five wins are needed at least, so this game is their breaking point.

I am giving them a chance here, hoping for a much-improved, motivated performance by Wolfsburg, so take them to win this game at good odds.
