Lille

Recent performances have allowed Lille to pull to within 5 points of top three Marseille in the French top flight and a Knock Out Play Off tie success last month means they have kept two avenues open for a return to the Champions League. That has to be the ambition for the squad over the next two months, although Lille have drawn one of the favourites to win the Europa League in the Last 16 tie.

After finishing in a disappointing 18th position in the League Phase of this competition, Lille had to battle past Crvena Zvezda in the Knock Out Play Off Round and it was far from an easy fixture. Ultimately they progressed in Extra Time having won the Second Leg in Belgrade, but Lille have now won 3 and lost 2 of the five home fixtures played in the Europa League this season.

Lille are unbeaten in 4 games in all competitions and they had won 3 in a row before being held to a 1-1 draw by Lorient this past weekend. That result does mean the side have only won 2 of the last 8 home games in all competitions and during that run Lille have been beaten 4 times.

Aston Villa

There was considerable disappointment when Aston Villa were beaten in the FA Cup Fourth Round, but it might have turned out to be a blessing in disguise with the team having a weekend off to prepare for the remainder of the March schedule. This feels like an important time for Aston Villa after the crushing home defeat to Chelsea and Unai Emery is well aware of the importance of earning a return to the Champions League.

The manager has enjoyed considerable success in this competition in his time with Sevilla and Villarreal and Emery will be very keen to help continue the development of Aston Villa. Last season they reached the Quarter Final of the Champions League, while they were Semi Finalists in the Conference League during Unai Emery's time as well. This season Aston Villa have a 3-0-1 away record in the Europa League and they will be expected to come through this Last 16 tie.

Aston Villa have just been moving through a really poor run of form and have won 1 of the last 7 games in all competitions, while the 1-4 defeat to Chelsea means they have lost 4 times in that run. The Villans had won 3 away games in a row in all competitions, but have been held to a draw at Bournemouth and then been beaten by Wolves in the last two on their travels.

Matty Cash, Harvey Elliot and John McGinn will be hoping to be availabel to travel.

Head to Head

Two years ago, Lille and Aston Villa met in the Conference League Quarter Final and both Legs were won 2-1 by the home team.

It was Aston Villa who progressed thanks to a Penalty Shoot Out win in the Second Leg hosted by Lille.

Prediction

This feels like a really big thirteen days for Aston Villa before the March international break with the Last 16 of the Europa League sandwiching a huge Premier League game at Old Trafford.

They conclude the schedule with a home game against relegation threatened, but improving, West Ham United and Unai Emery will be hoping the several days of work on the training ground will pay dividends for his squad.

A 1-4 home loss to Chelsea will have really dented the confidence and Aston Villa have lost 3 of the last 4 games in all competitions.

There is no doubt that they are missing key midfielders, which has been a factor in the loss of form, but Unai Emery will also feel his team have just made a few mistakes at both ends of the pitch. Aston Villa have been creating chances, but have been wasteful, and little incidents are just working against them at the moment.

John McGinn is potentially going to be available for the First Leg of this Last 16 tie and he is a huge influence.

Even if he is not available, the manager has refused to make excuses for some of the recent performances and Aston Villa should be well aware of how awkward things can become when facing Lille.

Two years ago they needed a late goal in normal time to force Extra Time and eventually Penalties to get past Lille, but the current group of home players have been struggling for consistency.

Lille are unbeaten in 4 games in all competitions, but were held to a 1-1 draw here and have struggled for victories in front of the home supporters.

Make no mistake, Lille were incredibly fortunate to still be in the tie when hosting Crvena Zvezda in the First Leg of the Knock Out Play Off Round last month and they will need to be a lot better against one of the favourites to win the Europa League.

In the main Lille have played well here in Europe this season, but visitors have been able to create some good chances against them.

The fixture looks like one that will be directed by the first goal, but Aston Villa look an appealing price having won 3 of the 4 away Europa League games played this season. Recent form has been a big disappointment, but having a few days on the training ground should be a help in working things out and Aston Villa may just have enough quality in the final third to secure a First Leg lead.
