Brentford
One poor decision from the Penalty spot proved to be the difference between a FA Cup Quarter Final place and elimination as far as Brentford are concerned- the manager refused to blame Dango Outtara for his decision to take a Panenka, but it did backfire and Brentford are left to concentrate on the Premier League.
In previous years the Cup exits frustrated the fans with Brentford comfortably in mid-table, but Keith Andrews has kept genuine motivation alive through the Premier League form. The Bees are 7th in the Premier League table and just 4 points behind the likely Champions League places and that means Brentford are really pushing to earn a place in European competition for the first time. Home form is going to be really important and Brentford have a 7-4-3 record at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Brentford will be frustrated with the FA Cup defeat last Monday at West Ham United, but the side have won 4 of the last 8 games in all competitions and that has kept them pushing in the right direction. They began the season with real confidence in front of the supporters, but recent results have meant Brentford have won 1 of the last 5 Premier League games in this part of West London.
Reiss Nelson could be available, but a number of the members of the squad look set to miss the next two League games and return after the March international break.
Wolves
Eight Premier League games remain and Rob Edwards has just given the fans the briefest of hopes that Wolves can manage to put together 'The Great Escape'. The FA Cup run was ended last weekend, but Wolves have won a couple of Premier League games and have a schedule that will offer them belief that they can not only avoid finishing bottom, but actually retain top flight status.
It remains a long shot for a team who are 12 points behind Nottingham Forest in 17th and who have won three League games all season- the Wolves position will look even more precarious if the teams above them have won this weekend before this game is played on Monday. All of those League wins have been at Molineux too and Wolves travel to the capital with a 0-4-10 away record in the Premier League.
Wolves have picked up 8 points from the last 15 available in the top flight, although the defeat to Liverpool in the FA Cup Fifth Round served as a reminder of where this current group of players stand. Rob Edwards has made Wolves tougher to beat and they have only conceded more than a single goal in 1 of the last 6 away games played in all competitions, but the flip of that is has been the struggle for goals that have hindered the team all season.
Andre is available having served a suspension, while there is a real hope that Jose Sa will be fit enough to travel and be restored to the goalkeeper position.
Head to Head
Two second half goals helped Brentford to a 0-2 win at Wolves in December.
Brentford had not won any of 6 at home against Wolves in all competitions, but snapped that run in an entertaining 5-3 win at the Gtech Community Stadium in October 2024.
Prediction
Both of these teams went out of the FA Cup in the Fifth Round last weekend, but there is still plenty to motivate them in the Premier League.
There has been some talk about Wolves finding a way to avoid the drop, but Rob Edwards will be aware that his team need to be a little stronger at both ends of the pitch to do that. Credit has to be given to any team fighting as hard as Wolves have been and with some solid recent results on the board, but they have also been on the right side of fine margins and the 1-3 loss to Liverpool in the FA Cup is a reminder of that.
Resilience has been shown away from home, but Wolves need wins, not draws, and the lack of goals has been a major problem since selling Matheus Cunha to Manchester United.
Fixtures like this one have to be won if Wolves are going to find a way out of trouble, miraculously, but that makes it tough for them to find the balance that will be needed to remain as resilient as they have been.
Wasteful finishing from opponents has helped and it may be a lot to ask Brentford to do the same as the likes of Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace, who created huge chances against Wolves in recent games.
Brentford have just hit a bit of a wall at home, but they have been very unlucky in some of the fixtures that have not been won.
Keith Andrews will want his team to maintain the levels with the full belief that those performances will lead to a lot more wins than losses and Brentford have had ample time to get over the disappointment of losing to West Ham United in the FA Cup Fifth Round.
Prior to last season, Brentford had a poor home record against Wolves, but they snapped that with a strong win over them last season and can make it two in a row in this part of West London.
