Barcelona

They may have been far from their fluid best in the North East of England last week, but a late Penalty has given Barcelona the momentum that they will want to take them through to another Champions League Quarter Final. In days gone by, Barcelona hosting this Second Leg would have felt like a formality, but manager Hansi Flick is trying to ground his squad and let them know how much hard work they will have to put in if they want to progress in the Champions League.

There has to be confidence they can do what is needed considering Barcelona won 3 of the 4 home games played in the League Phase, but the exception was a defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. Plenty of goals were being scored in front of the home fans, but the lack of clean sheets is an issue that will need to be addressed if Barcelona want to reach the Final of the Champions League for the first time in over decade.

Barcelona are unbeaten in 6 games in all competitions since suffering consecutive defeats in February, while the 5-2 home win over Sevilla means they have won 5 of those matches played. Since losing to Paris Saint-Germain at home in the Champions League on October 1st, Barcelona have won 15 in a row in front of their own fans in all competitions.

Gavi was back on the bench this past weekend and is likely to be a substitute again.

Newcastle United

Eddie Howe will be frustrated that his Newcastle United team could not make more of the promising positions they found themselves in during the First Leg of this Champions League Last 16 tie. The 0-1 win at Stamford Bridge on Saturday will have just given the Newcastle United squad a boost ahead of the Second Leg this Wednesday and has just offered them an outside shot at getting back in the premier UEFA competition through a strong domestic finish.

It has been a memorable campaign for Newcastle United in the Champions League considering two years ago they were dumped out in the Group Stage of the old format of the competition. They crushed Qarabag in the Knock Out Play Off Round last month, and Newcastle United have only lost 1 of the 5 away games played in the Champions League this season.

Newcastle United have just been struggling for consistency over the last six weeks, but the win at Chelsea on Saturday will have been a timely boost of confidence for the squad. The Magpies have won 4 of the last 5 away games played in all competitions with the exception being a 2-1 defeat at Manchester City last month.

Sandro Tonali and Lewis Miley are hoping to be able to travel with the squad. The manager made some changes to his starting eleven on Saturday to keep key players fresh with this fixture in mind.

Head to Head

This is the third meeting between Barcelona and Newcastle United this season, but the first hosted by the Spanish club.

In two previous visits to the Nou Camp, Newcastle United have lost both times.

Prediction

There was very little between the teams in both games played at St James' Park this season, but Barcelona have managed to find positive results both times.

Newcastle United fans will say that their team deserved more than a 1-1 draw in the First Leg of this Last 16 tie and they are probably right to feel that way- however, the lack of quality in the final third ultimately cost the English Premier League club and Eddie Howe's team will need an almost perfect performances to earn a spot in the Quarter Final of the Champions League.

They can do that and proved that with the win at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The Magpies also showed plenty of resilience to stay in the fixture at Paris Saint-Germain in the Group Stage and stole a point in that one and that should mean the Newcastle United squad travel with some confidence.

In saying that, Barcelona just scored five goals in a home win that has extended the winning run to 15 games in all competitions at the Nou Camp. Even in the League Phase of the Champions League, Barcelona scored a lot of goals and that firepower may just be the difference, although the defensive high line approach is one that Newcastle United will feel they can become the latest to exploit with the pace in the final third.

So you have to believe Newcastle United can play a part on Wednesday, although it is very difficult to see anything other than a Barcelona victory when all is said and done.

The home team will likely dominate the ball and are unlikely to be as wasteful as Chelsea proved to be in the defeat on Saturday.

Barcelona should be focused and respectful having seen the power of the Premier League up close this season, but the Spanish League leaders should have the qualities needed to push their way through to what is likely going to be a Quarter Final against domestic rivals Atletico Madrid.
