Aston Villa v Lille
Football: UEFA Europa League Last 16 Second Leg
Thursday 19th March 2026 - Kick Off 8pm
This game is live on TV

Aston Villa

Another Premier League defeat to a Champions League chasing rival could have been weighed heavily on Aston Villa, but they have benefited from Chelsea and Liverpool dropping home points. Unai Emery will be demanding his squad pick themselves up and produce two big performances at Villa Park before the March international break as they look to keep Champions League hopes alive.

The Villans finished 2nd in the Europa League standings and they have been able to bring back a narrow lead from the First Leg of this Last 16 tie. There was very little between Aston Villa and Lille, but being back at home feels like a big advantage for the English Premier League club who produced a 4-0-0 record here in the League Phase.

Aston Villa have only won 1 of the last 6 games in all competitions and the 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford means they have been beaten 4 times in that run. Earlier in the season, Aston Villa had been very strong at Villa Park, but they have won 1 of the last 5 here in all competitions and suffered 4 losses in the last 7 fixtures hosted.

Jadon Sancho will be available after being ineligible to play against Manchester United. The manager may choose to make some changes to freshen up his team after the disappointing defeat on Sunday afternoon.

Lille

There are 6 points between 3rd placed Marseille and 7th placed Rennes in the French Ligue 1 standings and Lille are right in the midst of the battle to earn a spot in the Champions League. After losing the First Leg of this Last 16 tie, Lille may soon be able to focus solely on domestic matters, although the squad are not thinking that way.

They battled very well, but the 0-1 defeat at home means Lille will have to do the same as they did in the Knock Out Play Off Round when winning the Second Leg away from home after losing by the same scoreline in the First Leg against Crvena Zvezda. The side had a 1-0-3 away record in the League Phase of the competition, but Lille doubled that win total in Belgrade last month.

Lille have lost 1 of the last 6 games in all competitions and battled for a 1-2 win at Rennes this past weekend to put together a fourth victory in that run of fixtures played. Not only are Lille unbeaten in 4 away games in all competitions, but they have won 3 in succession and conceded a single goal in that time.

Head to Head

This is the fourth meeting between these clubs since April 2024 and Aston Villa have won 2 of the previous 3 with the other ending in a victory for Lille.

The sole fixture hosted by Aston Villa ended 2-1 in favour of the home team.

Prediction

There was very little between the teams when they met in France last week, but Aston Villa's slightly superior quality shone through to give them a lead in this Last 16 tie.

They are back at home this week, but Aston Villa have been struggling for consistency at Villa Park.

The squad has perhaps been stretched by injury and having to play every few days and that may have contributed to some of the poorer results of late. There is also the factor of Aston Villa not getting the fine margins on their side as they were earlier this season and the lack of real creativity in the final third is a concern.

In the main that has not been an issue in the Europa League and Aston Villa have shown much more consistent threat in the final third in this competition compared with the Premier League.

Unai Emery's experience has helped in the Europa League too and the lead from the First Leg will mean Aston Villa can play with some patience.

Things are different for Lille- they may not want to push too early, but eventually they are going to have to try and find a way to get back into this tie. In recent away games, Lille have begun to find some confidence as the wins have been put together, but this is a step up in terms of level compared with some of the opponents faced and it may see the away team come up short.

Two years ago, Lille were beaten 2-1 here in the Conference League and there is every chance Aston Villa can secure a victory with a similar scoreline.

Changes are going to be made to freshen things up, but there is still an option to bring in some solid replacements into this starting eleven and it may be enough for Aston Villa to earn a Quarter Final spot with some real conviction.
