Everton
David Moyes may feel that his Everton team deserved more out of the trip to the Emirates Stadium than the final scoreline may indicate and they had been moments away from giving the League leaders a setback in the title challenge. The motivation for Everton is not about playing spoiler for others, but getting themselves into contention for European places and this is another big fixture for the team ahead of the March international break.
The defeat in North London was disappointing after all of the effort put into the fixture, but Everton remain 8th in the Premier League table and they are still only 6 points behind rivals Liverpool in the top five. Stronger home form would have had some Everton fans thinking about returning to the Champions League, but the record at the new home is just 5-4-6 in the Premier League and the side have scored 18 goals and conceded 19 in those matches.
Everton drew at Brighton at the end of January, but have won 3 and lost 3 of the 6 Premier League games played since then. Before beating Burnley 2-0 at Hill Dickinson Stadium, Everton had not won any of 6 League games at this ground and they have earned just a couple of points from the 18 available in that time.
Tyrique George has yet to have a big impact with Everton, but he cannot play this weekend against his parent club. Jarrad Branthwaite, James Tarkowski and Carlos Alcaraz are all doubts.
Chelsea
Two late goals conceded in Paris in the Champions League Last 16 First Leg put Chelsea on the back foot and they were effectively eliminated inside the first 14 minutes of the Second Leg as they fell 0-2 behind against Paris Saint-Germain. The quality of finishing was the difference between the European and World Champions in that tie and that leaves Liam Rosenior and the squad focusing on earning a spot in the Champions League places in the English top flight and the FA Cup.
They played before the main Champions League rivals last weekend, but Chelsea were beaten at home and that means they have slipped into 6th place, although still only 3 points behind Aston Villa in the top four. Bouncing back from a couple of rough fixtures at Stamford Bridge will be the focus for Chelsea who have a 7-4-4 away record in the Premier League.
Chelsea conceded early, but crushed Aston Villa 1-4 at Villa Park earlier this month and would have been hoping to build on that result. Instead they have failed to win any of the last 4 in all competitions in normal time and have suffered 3 defeats in a row. The 5-2 defeat at Paris Saint-Germain means Chelsea have won 1 of the last 4 away games in all competitions and suffered defeats in half of those matches.
Malo Gusto and Benoit Badiashile are hoping to shake off illnesses, but Trevoh Chalobah suffered a serious looking injury on Tuesday and is almost certainly ruled out. Filip Jorgensen, Reece James and Jamie Gittens are others not expected to travel, while Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro were withdrawn early during the week to get them ready for this important fixture.
Head to Head
Chelsea beat Everton 2-0 at Stamford Bridge earlier this season.
They won just 1 of the last 8 visits to Goodison Park and Everton had beaten Chelsea 5 of those matches.
Last season the game finished goalless at Goodison Park in December 2024.
Prediction
After a couple of harsh lessons handed out by the European Champions sandwiching a Premier League defeat, Chelsea are looking to bounce back before the players head away for international duty.
If this fixture was at Goodison Park, you may have really worried for a squad that has been stretched by injury, but Everton have struggled for form at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Surprisingly they made a decent start in their new home, but it has become tougher and tougher for Everton.
They did beat Burnley here last time out, but Everton had lost 4 of 6 home League games before that and David Moyes' team have struggled for goals in matches here all season. Just 18 have been scored in front of the home fans and Everton have struggled for consistency in creating chances, although will pose a threat from set pieces.
Chelsea are going to be without some key defenders, but Everton may have to do without Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkowski to even things up.
Liam Rosenior will have work to do in order to pick his players up after the thumping defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, but he will be confident that his team have played well enough in recent weeks to have earned better results. They certainly created enough chances to earn a positive result in the French capital, while Chelsea have generally been better away from home under the current manager.
By giving the likes of Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernandez and Joao Pedro plenty of rest, Chelsea can at least head to Merseyside confident in their ability to create good chances and that could be the difference between the teams.
The away team will have to defend the set pieces better than they have at times, but Everton are not a team creating a host of open play chances. As long as Chelsea can find a way to cope with the balls coming into the box, they should have the quality in the final third to create the chances that can see them win for only the second time in the best part of a decade of visits to Everton.
