Chelsea
If they had taken some early opportunities while the game was goalless, Chelsea's visit to Everton may have ended very differently compared with the final 3-0 defeat. Another loss has placed a lot of pressure on manager Liam Rosenior, but the March international break may have come at a good time with the players able to get away from the intense environment at Stamford Bridge.
For now the Chelsea board remain committed to Liam Rosenior, but you have to feel his future is going to be tied to the final position earned in the Premier League. Missing out on another season in the Champions League would be a huge blow for Chelsea, while there is also pressure to win silverware after a successful end to the 2024/25 campaign. The Blues have beaten Charlton Athletic, Hull City and Wrexham in the FA Cup run and face another lower League opponent in their bid to reach the Semi Final for the seventh time in ten seasons.
Chelsea needed Extra Time to beat Wrexham in the FA Cup Fifth Round, but have followed up by losing 4 in a row in all competitions and conceding 12 goals in those defeats. They had to fight back from 0-2 behind to beat West Ham United 3-2 at Stamford Bridge, but Chelsea have won none of the last 4 here since then and have lost consecutive fixtures against Newcastle United and Paris Saint-Germain without scoring a goal.
Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah both missed England duty and are expected to be absent in this fixture, although both will be glad to hear that Thomas Tuchel has kept them high in his World Cup thoughts. Jamie Gittens is also a doubt for the home team.
Port Vale
The elite players and clubs were given a break over the last couple of weeks with those top names representing national teams, but it is not always the case for those playing in the third tier of English Football. It was not a full calendar last weekend, but Port Vale were involved and being thumped 4-0 at Adams Park by Wycombe Wanderers.
Late goals may have put a gloss on the final scoreline in favour of the Play Off chasing hosts, but it has also left Port Vale in a position where Relegation feels inevitable. They are propping up the League One table and 14 points from safety, although Port Vale have 'nothing to lose' in this FA Cup Quarter Final. The side have beaten Maidon & Tiptree, Bristol Rovers, Fleetwood Town, Bristol City and Premier League Sunderland in the run to the Quarter Final, but Port Vale have benefited from hosting all of those ties.
Port Vale have followed the upset of Sunderland by winning 1 of the last 6 games played and they have suffered 4 defeats in that time. The away form has been particularly poor and Port Vale have suffered 4 losses in the last 5 on their travels, including the last 3 in a row.
The biggest names in the Port Vale squad will be expected to be involved as the team chase the biggest upset in the FA Cup run and earn a spot at Wembley Stadium for the Semi Final.
Head to Head
Chelsea and Port Vale have not met since the 1928/29 season when both played in the same Division.
Chelsea had won all 6 games hosted against Port Vale until the last meeting in November 1928 that ended in a 3-3 draw.
Prediction
Anything other than a Chelsea win would be a huge upset and you would have to wonder if Liam Rosenior could be able to survive a FA Cup Quarter Final defeat at home against the League One bottom club.
That looks unlikely and Chelsea return from the March international break looking to snap a 4 game losing run.
There is more than another seven days gap between Chelsea and the next Premier League fixture against Manchester City so this is an opportunity for the manager to pick a strong team and look for a confidence boosting victory.
Pressure will intensify if Chelsea are not able to cruise through and so that may also influence team selection- Liam Rosenior is unlikely to risk anyone too quickly so the likes of Reece James will be expecting to miss out, but a stronger lineup than the one that began the Fifth Round tie at Wrexham can be expected.
After upsetting Sunderland, Port Vale have already done far more than expected in the FA Cup this season and the players can travel to West London knowing that all of the expectation is burdened by the Chelsea players.
It may not be enough to bridge the huge gap between the teams and Port Vale have won all of the FA Cup ties played this season in front of their own supporters. The conditions cannot even things out on Saturday and Port Vale have suffered a big defeat in the last away game played last weekend and have lost 4 of the last 5 on their travels.
Earlier this season, a much changed Arsenal team beat Port Vale 0-2 at Vale Park in the League Cup.
Hosting should mean Chelsea are much more comfortable in the final scoreline and they may score a couple of late goals to really put a gloss on the progress into the FA Cup Semi Final.
