VfB Stuttgart suffered a very painful 0-2 defeat against Borussia Dortmund last weekend. They conceded both goals after the 90th minute, right before the end, so that defeat hurt their top-four chances.

Now they must bounce back against Hamburger SV and win because next week they have a big game against Bayern Munich, which will not be that easy.

Last week’s home defeat against Borussia Dortmund was VfB Stuttgart’s first after four straight home wins. They are an excellent home side this season, having won 10 of 14 home matches in the Bundesliga.

VfB Stuttgart’s record against Hamburger SV is also excellent – four wins in their last five duels, but they lost against Hamburger SV 2-1 in their first duel this season.

Hamburger SV is winless in three, drawing twice, including last week when they played to a 1-1 draw against Augsburg. They are six points above the relegation playoff spot before this round, and are still under relegation pressure.

Hamburger SV has the most draws this season – 10, and plays with a mentality to avoid defeat rather than to go for a win. They looked very shaky recently, which could be fatal here, but next week they have a big relegation duel against Werder Bremen, so they have a chance to pick up points.

Hamburger SV will be without their versatile Swiss defender, Miro Muheim (4 assists in 26 games), who received a red card last week. So their defense will likely be much weaker now.

Regarding away displays, Hamburger SV remained unbeaten in four of their last five away matches (two wins, two draws), but lost their latest away match 3-2 against Borussia Dortmund.

The Betting Verdict

VfB Stuttgart chases a top-four finish, and they must forget that unfortunate defeat from last week quickly.

They will likely be more motivated here, chasing vital three points, even though Hamburger SV is also seeking points in their relegation battle.

Still, the quality is clearly on the home side, so VfB Stuttgart to win in combination with a couple of goals is my call here.
