Preview

An inter-League Series between two teams that have begun in contrasting form begins on Friday when the Boston Red Sox (4-8) visit the St Louis Cardinals (7-5). Pre-season expectations are pretty different for the two squads and April form does not always mean October Baseball being played later in the year.

Both teams enter this Series having won the last one- it is the first time Boston have been successful in 2026 having taken the last two games from the Milwaukee Brewers. The St Louis Cardinals did the same against the Washington Nationals and have won three of the last four games, but they will need a veteran heading to the mound to find some form.

The Cardinals will be handing the ball to Dustin May who has a 0-2 record and 15.95 ERA from two starts made in 2026, while only being on the mound for a little more than 7 Innings. He has been bouncing around the League now and Dustin May has not made more than twenty-three appearances in any single season, although a short stint with the Boston Red Sox in 2025 may offer him more motivation.

Dustin May finished with a 1-4 record from the six appearances made for the Red Sox last season and he had been given the start on five of those occasions. The 5.40 ERA was not enough to see him given any more time in Boston, but the familiarity with some of the batters could aid May as he bids for a first solid outing in 2026.

The Red Sox will counter with a sophomore pitcher when giving the ball to Connolly Early who made just four starts in his rookie season, but has already made two starts this season. The youngster has a 0-0 record and 2.89 ERA in the two starts made in 2026, but Early has been operating for a little longer on the mound with over 9 Innings completed.

Connolly Early gave up two runs in 4 Innings thrown in the most recent start and he had offered up 4 Walks on that day too. The lack of run support has been evident in both starts, but Early will be pretty happy with his own level as he prepares to face a St Louis batting lineup has produced at least five runs in five consecutive starts.

In recent outings, there have been signs that the Boston batting lineup is finally waking up and they are facing a pitcher who has allowed six runs in each of the two starts made this season.

Dustin May actually pitched against the Boston Red Sox last season just before being traded to the team- as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers, May allowed four runs in 5 Innings thrown against the Red Sox and was saddled with the loss.

Prediction

The Boston Red Sox have big expectations to manage this season and may be coming out of an early season slump.

They do look to have the pitcher edge in this game at the St Louis Cardinals and can make that count in recording a third win in a row.
