Burnley v Manchester City
Football: English Premier League
Wednesday 22nd April 2026 - Kick Off 8pm
This game is live on TV

Burnley

In a tight first half, the injury time strike gave Burnley the advantage at relegation rivals Nottingham Forest and fans would have felt some renewed hope in the survival fight. However, the second half capitulation at the City Ground has left Burnley on the edge of the cliff and they are almost certainly going to be playing Championship Football come the end of this campaign.

If West Ham United win on Monday night and Burnley fail to do the same on Wednesday, that relegation could be confirmed at Turf Moor. They are 19th in the Premier League table and 12 points from safety before the fixture at Selhurst Park is played on Monday, but Burnley are down to the final five League games and they will be virtually relegated on Wednesday with a defeat regardless of the result between Crystal Palace and West Ham United. The side have a 2-5-9 record at Turf Moor in the League and that has not been good enough.

Burnley have not won any of the last 8 games in all competitions and picking up a single point from the last 18 available in the Premier League has seen them almost slump out of the Division without much of a fight. They have lost 4 of the last 5 at home in all competitions and Burnley have conceded at least twice in 6 of the last 7 Premier League games here.

Axel Tuanzebe remains a doubt, while both Hannibal Mejbri and Zeki Amdouni may return for the next League game after this one. Connor Roberts is still hoping to return before the end of the campaign.

Manchester City

Pep Guardiola had laid out a challenge to his Manchester City players to find a way to beat Premier League leaders Arsenal and take control of the destiny of the title. The game was an entertaining one on Sunday with both teams having their chances, but Manchester City did find a way to earn the three points and can move to the top of the Premier League table by winning on Wednesday evening.

There is no denying the momentum is with Manchester City in the title race, but there is a fine margin between success and failure and they need to keep winning football matches to retain control. The side make the relatively short trip to Burnley with an 8-4-4 away record where Manchester City have scored 27 goals and conceded 17.

Manchester City had been on a run of 1 win in 5 games in all competitions and had dropped Premier League points in draws with Nottingham Forest and West Ham United in that run. However, they have bounced back to win 4 in a row in all competitions, including two wins over Arsenal in the League Cup Final and Premier League. Manchester City have won 3 of the last 4 away Premier League games with the exception being the draw at the London Stadium.

Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol look to be the only absentees in the squad. It would still be a surprise to see too many changes from the team that started the win over Arsenal, although Rodri may be an injury concern having looked to be struggling with an issue.

Head to Head

Manchester City crushed Burnley 5-1 at home earlier this season.

They have won on each of the last 6 visits to Turf Moor, including a 0-3 win here on the first weekend of the 2023/24 Premier League season.

Prediction

After coming through against Arsenal in a game that could have easily gone the other way, Manchester City may be pretty glad to have a fixture like this one next on the schedule.

The game has been moved forward a few days with Manchester City set to take part in the FA Cup Semi Final this weekend, and that is perhaps the biggest obstacle in front of the team.

However, this is a Manchester City managed by someone who is well versed with dealing with fixtures being moved at this time of the season and there is a lot of momentum with Pep Guardiola's squad.

It helps facing a Burnley team who capitulated at the City Ground on Sunday and one that looks destined to return to the Championship.

Scott Parker has tried his best, but has not quite cracked managing in the Premier League and Burnley have conceded far too many goals. They have conceded at least twice in 6 of the last 7 at home in the Premier League and containing this Manchester City attack seems like it is going to be a really difficult test for a Burnley team who have racked up the defeats in recent weeks.

You have to believe Manchester City will be chasing an early goal and you cannot ignore the fact that goal difference may yet play a part in the final standings in the Division. The momentum is with Manchester City, but if both City and Arsenal win out, they will end with the same number of points and it is The Gunners who have a one goal advantage in the goal difference department.

Chasing big wins can be problematic, but Manchester City should be confident they can secure a comfortable victory at a ground they have enjoyed visiting. They have already thumped Burnley at the Etihad Stadium and Manchester City have all of the credentials to make the journey back home with a comfortable away victory on Wednesday evening as they move ominously to the top of the Division.
