Arsenal

The result will have been a bitter pill to swallow, but Mikel Arteta has to take some positives in the performance produced by his Arsenal team. With a bit more luck on the day, or better composure in the final third, there is every chance that Arsenal would have earned a positive result at the Etihad Stadium and retained a strong grip of the destination of the Premier League title.

Instead the fine margins moved against Arsenal and they now know that this title race could come down to goal difference if both Manchester City and themselves win out. There is every reason to believe that Arsenal will be kicking off on Saturday evening in 2nd place in the Premier League standings unless Burnley have done them a huge favour and upset Manchester City by avoiding defeat on Wednesday. No matter what has happened at Turf Moor, Arsenal have to improve the 12-2-2 record at the Emirates Stadium over the next two weekends.

Arsenal are in the midst of a slump having won 1 of the last 6 games in all competitions and being beaten in 4 of those fixtures- this has meant being dumped out of the FA Cup, losing the League Cup Final and control of the Premier League. The Gunners had won 7 in a row here in all competitions, but have lost to Bournemouth and drawn with Sporting in he last couple of fixtures played in front of the home supporters.

Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori and Bukayo Saka all missed out last weekend and they will be hoping to return as soon as possible. The manager will likely make some rotations to his starting eleven, but Mikel Arteta cannot afford to take too many risks.

Newcastle United

The end of the season is a month away and so there is little chance of Newcastle United making any rash assessments of Eddie Howe as manager of the club before the campaign is completed. However, reports suggest the board are not happy with the way things have gone for Newcastle United this season and Howe is under pressure to oversee a strong finish.

Another home defeat has left Newcastle United in 14th place in the Premier League table and they have to finish with some big wins to earn another season in European Football, which would have been the minimum aim for the team. The Magpies have a disappointing 4-4-8 away record in the top flight this season where they have scored 16 goals and conceded 21.

Newcastle United have won 1 of the last 7 games in all competitions and that was against struggling Chelsea, while they have lost 4 in a row since that victory at Stamford Bridge. They have lost 3 of the last 4 away games in all competitions, but a longer sample of away games will show that Newcastle United have won 4 of the last 7 on their travels.

Joelinton will complete a suspension, while Tino Livramento and Anthony Gordon are both doubts.

Head to Head

Two late goals helped Arsenal recover to win 1-2 at St James' Park at the back end of September.

Arsenal have won 12 of the last 13 Premier League home games against Newcastle United.

Prediction

All eyes during the week will be on Manchester City's trip to Burnley, but Mikel Arteta and the players are going to be focusing on things they can control first and foremost.

The only challenge that will have been set out for the Arsenal players is winning the last eight games they will be hoping to play in this season and trying to secure two big trophies.

Losing at the Etihad Stadium is a blow, but it hurts more when you put that defeat alongside the recent run of form that has seen Arsenal lose 4 of the last 6 games in all competitions. Those losses have seen hopes of first a Quadruple and then a Treble go up in smoke, but the defeat last Sunday has given Manchester City the narrowest of edges in the Premier League title race.

However, Arsenal will do well to be reminded that it is a very narrow edge.

If both teams win out, it will come down to goal difference and Arsenal will be hoping to ramp up the pressure by producing back to back solid victories at the Emirates Stadium. The manager will be hoping they come out with the same intensity and attacking threat they posed at Manchester City last Sunday, although it is to be noted that teams like Newcastle United and Fulham will offer a different kind of resistance.

In saying that, the visit of Newcastle United looks to be a pretty good opponent to take on if you are sitting in the Arsenal camp.

Not only have Arsenal won 12 of the last 13 home League fixtures against Newcastle United, but Eddie Howe's team have lost 4 in a row in all competitions ahead of this fixture. The defeats to Crystal Palace and Bournemouth since the March international break has really ramped up the pressure on Eddie Howe and reports have suggested there will be a parting of the way with this manager come the end of the season.

Some of the players are not responding as hoped and Newcastle United have looked really vulnerable defensively, which should help Arsenal/

The absence of Bukayo Saka has hurt, but Martin Odegaard was back last weekend and looked to be in decent rhythm, while this Arsenal squad is still pretty deep. Mikel Arteta does need some of those attacking players to step up having missed some decent chances last Sunday, but there were enough encouraging signs to believe The Gunners have too much firepower for a Newcastle United team who have been out of sorts.

Bruno Guimaraes should be fit to start and give the away team a boost, but it may not be enough and Arsenal should have enough to cover the Asian Handicap set, even if they have to get through some nervy moments during the ninety minutes.
