Manchester United
After the disappointment of losing at home to rivals Leeds United, Michael Carrick has to be very proud of the grit that his Manchester United team showed in winning 0-1 at Stamford Bridge last weekend. It is a victory that places one foot back in the Champions League and Manchester United will know that provides them a strong financial boost to take into the summer transfer plans.
They have not officially confirmed a top five spot, but Manchester United have moved 10 points clear of Chelsea in 6th place and with both teams having five Premier League games to play. The gap might be closer by the time this fixture is played on Monday, but Manchester United are in control of their own destiny as they bid to improve the 10-3-3 record at Old Trafford.
Manchester United may only have won 2 of the last 5 Premier League games played, but they have been important wins over Aston Villa and Chelsea. The 5 game winning run at Old Trafford was ended in the 1-2 defeat to Leeds United two weeks ago.
Harry Maguire is back from a suspension, but Lisandro Martinez continues to serve his own and misses the next two games. Leny Yoro and Bryan Mbeumo are hoping to shake off injuries, while Patrick Dorgu could return next week.
Brentford
A bit more composure and a little bit of luck would have seen Brentford score a late winner in the derby against Fulham last weekend, but frustratingly they had to settle for a point. It keeps things ticking, but Keith Andrews will know that turning a couple of those draws into victories would have given Brentford an outside chance of earning a spot in the Champions League and not just any European competition.
Results from last weekend have left Brentford in 7th place in the Premier League table having an inferior goal difference compared with Chelsea, but there is still a big target for them to aim at to conclude a memorable season. The Bees travel to the North West with a 6-2-8 away record in the top flight where they have scored 20 goals and conceded 25.
Brentford have not lost any of the last 7 games in all competitions in normal time, but they were beaten on Penalties in the FA Cup Fifth Round and the draw against Fulham makes it 5 straight stalemates in the Premier League. The side are unbeaten in 5 away Premier League games, but the last 2 have ended in goalless draws at Bournemouth and Leeds United.
Rico Henry, Vitaly Janelt, Jordan Henderson and Joshua Dasilva are all set to miss out.
Head to Head
Brentford beat Manchester United 3-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium earlier this season.
Since they returned to the top flight, Brentford have lost all 4 visits to Old Trafford.
Prediction
The important three points earned at Stamford Bridge has put Manchester United on the brink of returning to the Champions League and this is going to be a huge boost for the club.
There are big financial rewards for competing with the best teams in European Football and especially with the new League Phase format guaranteeing eight games.
Michael Carrick's future will be determined in the summer and he can only focus on keeping his players concentrated on winning matches. The defeat to Leeds United in the last game at Old Trafford will have just reminded Manchester United that they cannot take anything for granted, while they are also facing a Brentford team with big ambitions of their own.
Upper management may have been taking some criticism for the appointment of Keith Andrews after Thomas Frank departed last summer and outsiders believed Brentford may even struggle to avoid the drop.
All credit has to be given to this team for still being in a real position to challenge to bring European Football to the Gtech Community Stadium, which is the next step of the development of the club, and Brentford are a stubborn team to beat.
The problem has been that Brentford have struggled to turn recent draws into wins.
Much of the West London derby lacked some intensity before late chances came Brentford's way, but they will need to do more if they are going to finish in the top eight places. 5 Premier League draws in a row have slowed momentum and Brentford may find it hard to contain Manchester United at this ground where they have played well enough for the majority of the campaign.
Having Harry Maguire back provides some defensive leadership after a makeshift defence did just enough to contain Chelsea last week.
Bryan Mbeumo will be desperate to face his former club, but Manchester United look like they have options in the final third and those give them the edge over Brentford.
Manchester United have found a way to beat Brentford in each of the 4 games hosted at Old Trafford since the latter returned to the top Division of English Football. The games have tended to be competitive, but Manchester United have had plenty of time to prepare and they may have just enough attacking prowess to come out on top in this last of the Premier League games scheduled for the weekend.
