Atletico Madrid
Ten years have passed since Atletico Madrid last reached the Champions League Final and some will have felt that the Diego Simeone time in charge should come to a conclusion sooner rather than later. All of those opinions will change dramatically if Simeone is able to take Atletico Madrid through to the Final of Europe's premier competition for a third time as manager of the club, although you have to imagine the Argentine is only thinking about lifting this trophy to shut down the doubters.
An upset win over Barcelona has taken Atletico Madrid through to the Champions League Semi Final, although the La Liga leaders were very unhappy with the officiating in both Legs of that tie. This is of no concern to Atletico Madrid who will be looking to build some kind of lead to take into the Second Leg having won 4 of 6 home Champions League games played this season. One of those wins came against Tottenham Hotspur of the Premier League in the Last 16 tie.
Atletico Madrid came from behind to beat Athletic Bilbao this past weekend, but the recent form has been very concerning. Prior to that, Atletico Madrid had won 1 of 8 games played in all competitions and had suffered 6 losses in normal time. Home form has been stronger and that has led to 7 wins in 10 games here in all competitions, while the only defeats in that run both came against Barcelona.
Pablo Barrios picked up an injury in the win over Athletic Bilbao and is a doubt. Julian Alvarez was not involved in that victory, but there is a hope that he is available for this one, while Ademola Lookman is another doubt.
Arsenal
After the poor recent form has seen domestic Cup successes slip out of Arsenal's hands and the control of the Premier League title doing the same, it was important for Mikel Arteta's team to beat Newcastle United. They were not at their most convincing best, but it was important to put three more points on the board and continue to keep the pressure on Manchester City to try and keep up.
Only once before have Arsenal reached the Final of the European Cup/Champions League and the challenge over the next few days is competing in this Semi Final and making sure the Premier League title push remains on track. The 0-1 win in Lisbon in the Quarter Final proved to be the difference for Arsenal, and The Gunners head to the Spanish capital knowing they have won 5 of 6 away Champions League games this season.
Arsenal's win over Sporting Lisbon in Portugal had been the only one produced in 6 matches in all competitions and they had lost 4 of those, which made the 1-0 win over Newcastle United feel important. The side have won 1 of the last 4 away games in all competitions and Arsenal have lost 2 of the last 3 by the same 2-1 scoreline at Southampton in the FA Cup and Manchester City in the Premier League.
Both Eberechi Eze and Kai Havertz had to come off early with injuries on Saturday and they are doubts for this one, even if Arsenal downplayed the significance of those knocks. Bukayo Saka was back on the bench, but may have to settle for that spot again, while Jurrien Timber has yet to return.
Head to Head
Arsenal crushed Atletico Madrid 4-0 at home in the League Phase of the competition back in October.
The only previous meetings came in the Europa League Semi Final in 2018 and it was Atletico Madrid who progressed 2-1 on aggregate thanks to a 1-0 win at home in the Second Leg.
Prediction
There is a perception around Atletico Madrid that they still play in the manner that saw Diego Simeone take them into two Champions League Finals in three years.
They were incredibly unfortunate to lose both, never mind one of those Finals against rivals Real Madrid, but ten years after the last appearance in the Champions League Final, Atletico Madrid are trying to get back there in a different way.
These days Atletico Madrid are much more on the front foot and they are a very dangerous team at home.
Barcelona have won here twice this month, but Atletico Madrid have won 7 of the last 10 in front of the home fans and they have already beaten English opposition in Tottenham Hotspur in the Last 16 of this competition.
Suffice to say that Arsenal offer a much different test for Atletico Madrid compared with a relegation threatened rival, but recent weeks have felt like the long-time English leaders are running on fumes.
4 losses in 6 games in all competitions have backed that up, but Arsenal did find a way to beat Newcastle United on Saturday even when not at their very best.
Mikel Arteta is likely to take a much more Simeone-like approach than Diego in the opposite dugout and that means looking to be hard to beat and counter if the home team get a little desperate. The Arsenal manager would likely be very confident if his team were level going into the Second Leg and Arsenal have lacked real conviction in the final third.
Returning Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka help, but the latter may have to start on the bench and the former may not be risked for more than 70 minutes when playing twice in the space of a few days. With that in mind, knocks picked up by Eberechi Eze and Kai Havertz hurt Arsenal and this could be a tough night in the office with the team having to dig in and show some resilience.
There hasn't been enough of that of late, but there was in the 0-1 win in Lisbon earlier this month and Arsenal are expected to take a similar approach in this fixture.
Atletico Madrid are very dangerous going forward and have some quality players in the final third, but they are another being impacted by injury and this could end up being a tie that is left with everything to play for in North London next week.
A narrow win for the home team is perhaps the most likely result, but Arsenal have shown plenty of grit in this competition all season and backing fewer than three goals to be shared out is the 'boring' approach to take.
