Nottingham Forest
There will be some frustration with the Premier League in scheduling the last League fixture on a Monday and thus giving Nottingham Forest twenty-four hours less recovery time than Aston Villa ahead of the Europa League Semi Final. The manager will also feel he may have gotten his team selection wrong as Nottingham Forest were thumped 4-0 on Thursday and Vitor Pereira will be keen to see a positive reaction.
Going out of the Europa League at that stage of the competition will have filled the squad with regret, but Nottingham Forest have to make sure they retain Premier League status. An important win at Stamford Bridge on Monday allowed Nottingham Forest to take full advantage of West Ham United's defeat and means they are 6 points clear of the bottom three, although 9 points are still available.
Nottingham Forest had been unbeaten in 10 games in all competitions and had won 5 in a row before the capitulation at Villa Park on Thursday. The Tricky Trees are unbeaten in 5 at the City Ground in all competitions and the players can win for a fourth time in a row here on Sunday afternoon.
Ola Aina and Morgan Gibbs-White are both hoping to be passed fit, while Murillo may have to settle for a place on the bench again. Both Zach Abbott and Dan Ndoye are hoping to be available.
Newcastle United
Recent reports had suggested that Newcastle United's board were contemplating making a managerial change at the end of what has been a disappointing campaign. However, the narrative has changed over the last week and Eddie Howe is expected to be retained and given a chance to help the club bounce back to full form next time around.
The Magpies are 13th in the Premier League table and will need to win the remaining three games and hope for others to slip up if they are going to earn a surprising return to European Football. It does feel unlikely for Newcastle United who travel to the East Midlands with a 4-4-9 away record in the Premier League this season.
Newcastle United had lost 5 in a row in all competitions, but scored two relatively early goals on their way to a 3-1 win over Brighton last weekend. Now they will be bidding to end a run of 3 straight away defeats in all competitions since beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge two months ago.
Lewis Miley has suffered a serious injury in training and may struggle to be fit for August, while Tino Livramento is not expected to take part for the remainder of the campaign. Fabian Schar is still unavailable for selection.
Head to Head
Newcastle United beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 at home earlier this season.
They did the Premier League double over Nottingham Forest last season and Newcastle United have won all 3 League visits to the City Ground since The Tricky Trees returned to the top flight.
Prediction
The performance on Thursday was incredibly disappointing from a Nottingham Forest point of view, but Vitor Pereira will know his team have little time to feel sorry for themselves.
Despite that, you do have to wonder how much of an impact the defeat in the Europa League Semi Final will have on the players with just a couple of days of rest between fixtures.
A win at Chelsea has put Nottingham Forest in a strong position to avoid the drop, but Pereira will know his team still need a win if they are going to really feel like they have done enough to avoid the drop. Even a draw may be enough this weekend unless West Ham United can stun leaders Arsenal and beat them in East London, but Nottingham Forest go out first and that means they should be only concentrating on trying to earn the three points.
It will be far from easy against a rested Newcastle United and a team that just snapped a 5 game losing run.
Eddie Howe's team played well at the Emirates Stadium two weeks ago and have quality in the final third that cannot be ignored, but Newcastle United do have some personnel issues to address in the summer. Some reports have indicated that key players may be looking for new challenges and this is a team that have lost 3 away games in a row in all competitions.
Having a full week to rest is important though and that makes this a tough game for Nottingham Forest, while Newcastle United have matched up pretty well with the hosts.
The Magpies have won 3 straight League games at the City Ground and already beat Nottingham Forest at home, but recent form had been more positive for Vitor Pereira's men prior to the game on Thursday.
It feels like another Premier League game where the draw looks to be a real runner- however, Nottingham Forest have been doing a little more than that in recent weeks and the home fans may push them across the line in this one.
Morgan Gibbs-White will be hoping to be involved, which would provide a boost, and Nottingham Forest can be backed on any 'Draw No Bet' market to find the three points that can begin preparations for another Premier League campaign.
