A Sports Betting Preview by Stu

New South Wales V Queensland
Rugby League : Australia : State of Origin 1 2026
Wednesday 27th May 2026 - KO 1935 AEST

New South Wales

New South Wales enter Game One with a number of new faces, a key returning player and a home game to kick off the 2026 series. The Blues attack is expected to revolve heavily around Nathan Cleary, whose game management and kicking control remain among the best in rugby league. Cleary’s greatest strength is his ability to dictate territory under pressure.

Defensively, Cleary is also one of the strongest halfbacks in the game, rarely targeted successfully despite the physical intensity of Origin football. Nathan combines with Mitchell Moses, his long kicking game consistently pins opponents deep inside their own half, while his calmness allows New South Wales to build pressure without forcing low-percentage plays.

Tedesco returning to the Origin arena is a huge call by Laurie Daley, leaving out Dylan Edwards who has done little wrong to lose his jersey. 5 debutants come into the squad, Fonua-Blake, Radley, Brailey, Koula and Strange all in great form but obviously not tested at this level. It is clear by these players being selected this match is set to be operated at speed and therefore the potential for fatigue is high.

The Blues squad possesses speed across the park, strong middle rotation depth, and arguably the more explosive attacking spine. The Blues challenge, however, has rarely been about talent — it has been about composure in key moments and handling Queensland’s ability to turn chaos into momentum.

Queensland Maroons

The Queensland Maroons once again arrive as underdogs in the eyes of many, yet history continually proves how dangerous Queensland become in this environment. The Maroons thrive in matches built on resilience, defensive desperation, and high emotions, all trademarks of Origin football.

Queensland’s pack is expected to focus heavily on winning the middle through aggression and line speed, aiming to pressure New South Wales playmakers into rushed decisions. Their ability to stay composed during difficult periods has separated them in Origin contests, and that mentality remains central to their approach. The Maroons have named 2 debutants, Fifita and Plath and incredibly have left out Reece Walsh allowing Ponga to rejoin the fold.

The influence of Cameron Munster will again be critical. Munster’s greatest strength is his unpredictability. Unlike structured playmakers, he thrives when matches become chaotic and defensive lines begin to fatigue. His running game, short kicking ability, and instinctive support play allow him to create opportunities from seemingly broken situations. Munster also carries enormous emotional energy into Origin football, often lifting Queensland through momentum-changing moments.

At fullback, Kalyn Ponga provides the Maroons with genuine skill. Pongas acceleration and support play make him incredibly dangerous around quick play-the-balls, and his willingness to attack compressed defensive lines can instantly change field position.

The Betting Verdict

The State of Origin opener between New South Wales Blues and the Queensland Maroons once again arrives with enormous intensity, and expectation. Few sporting contests match the emotion and brutality of Origin football, where momentum swings are violent, defensive errors are punished instantly, and individual moments can define entire series.

Game One shapes as a classic contrast between New South Wales structured control and Queensland’s instinctive, momentum-driven style. There have been 135 Origin matches played, QLD lead 61-72 with 2 matches resulting in draws. NSW do much better at home than away, 20-13 while Queensland are 12-21. Queensland won last years series 2-1, with all to do in game 3, which was one of the best displays of mistake free rugby league you could ever witness.

The Blues appear to hold the edge through their kicking game, middle rotation depth, and overall attacking balance. If Cleary is allowed to control territory and New South Wales dominate possession early, they are capable of suffocating Queensland through repeat pressure and defensive fatigue.

However, Origin rarely unfolds exactly to script, Queensland’s greatest strength lies in their ability to remain dangerous even when under sustained pressure. Munster and Ponga are both capable of creating points from broken play, and the Maroons historically thrive in applying pressure.

The opening twenty minutes will be critical. If New South Wales establish field position and complete highly, they can force Queensland into a territorial grind. But if the Maroons stay within reach and turn the contest into a dogfight, the pressure begins shifting back onto the Blues.

New South Wales appear the more balanced side entering Game One, but Queensland’s ability to disrupt structure keeps the contest extremely dangerous.

Prediction: Blues by 6 in a brutal, physical contest with Blues 1–12 margin, with Origin I expect the ref to put the whistle away as much as possible and defence is likely to keep scoring tight throughout and under the 42.5.
