Preview

The majority of the Boroughs of New York City are going to be focusing on the NBA Playoffs and the run the New York Knicks are putting together as they have moved two games away from returning to the NBA Finals for the first time this Century.

However, Game 3 takes place on Saturday and that does allow the sports bars to focus on the Major League on Friday evening when both home teams are in action.

Our focus here is on the New York Mets (22-28) as they try and put some consistency on the board in the National League East. The money that has been invested in the 'other team' from Gotham has raised expectations in Queens, but the Mets have not started this season as they would have imagined and are already 12.5 games out of the Division lead.

It is May though and that means things can be turned around, but the Mets need to get something going, which is what they are hoping to do after winning four of the last six games.

They are fourth in the National League East and only the Miami Marlins (22-39) sitting below them in the Division after losing for a third straight time against the Atlanta Braves on Thursday.

Miami will be giving the ball to Eury Perez in this game and the starting pitcher has a 2-6 record and 5.33 ERA in ten starts this season, although the recent ones have been more troubling.

Eury Perez has been given the decision loss in each of the last five starts for the Marlins and his ERA is running at 6.49 in those outings. Miami have given him time on the mound to try and turn things around with Perez completing 5 Innings each time, but the pitcher has yet to regain the rhythm he had when beginning the season.

Games against the New York Mets have been difficult for him and Eury Perez has a 0-3 record and a 10.00 ERA from the three career starts against this Divisional rival.

The Mets are going to counter with a young pitcher of their own and one that is still trying to work out the best place for him in the Major Leagues. Tobias Meyers has had 65 career appearances in the big Leagues since 2024, but those have almost been split perfectly between starting and relief outings.

This is the first year in the New York Mets uniform and Tobias Meyers has a 0-1 record with a 3.41 ERA from sixteen appearances made, although only one has been as a starter.

Even that start can be described as an opener role with Meyers lasting just 2 completed Innings before the ball was turned to the Mets bullpen, which could be something we see on Friday.

In May, we have seen Tobias Meyers used in a closing spot and he has one Save on the CV, although the most recent appearance saw him add to the Blown Save numbers against the Washington Nationals.

He will take some confidence from his three career appearances against the Miami Marlins, which does include one start. In those, Tobias Meyers has a 1-0 record and 1.50 ERA.

The Marlins took six of the last eight games against the New York Mets in the 2025 season series as the Divisional rivals meet for the first time in 2026.

Prediction

There is some uncertainty about both starting pitchers in this opening game between the New York Mets and Miami Marlins, but the team from Gotham has shown a bit more positive form over the last several days.

A confidence boost could be enough to get after Eury Perez and that may allow Tobias Meyers and the bullpen to control this game in favour of the New York Mets.
