There are more than two-thirds of the Major League Baseball regular season to play and so there is not a lot of focus on the standings. That is the long-term focus for the New York Yankees, but the fans will be excited to see Gerrit Cole go back to the mound- the All Star pitcher had missed almost 600 clear days of Major League action as Cole went through Tommy John Surgery and then recovery, but the first outing back was like he had never been away.

Gerrit Cole made seventeen starts in 2024 and missed the entirety of the 2025 season.

He returned earlier this month and Gerrit Cole threw 6 Innings against the Tampa Bay Rays where he held them scoreless and issues just 3 Walks. This is a hugely encouraging return, but the Yankees will be patient with Cole and will accept that there are going to be some bumps in the road.

It is unlikely Gerrit Cole will ever get back this absolute best, but that has as much to do with age as surgery, although he has shown he can become a key part of a starting rotation.

Prediction

There are going to be questions about Gerrit Cole for several weeks as he is analysed after a long layoff, but the opening start was very encouraging for every New York Yankees fan.

He will be looking to build on that and should receive support from the Yankees batting lineup, who have gotten after Noah Cameron in both previous games against the Kansas City Royals sophomore pitcher.

Recent outings had been a little troubling for Noah Cameron before bouncing back last time out, but the Royals continue to struggle with this powerhouse and the Yankees can win on the road to complete the sweep for a second time this season.
