France will be desperate to go one step better in this forthcoming edition of the World Cup having been ousted by Argentina on penalties in the previous final after the scores ended level on 3-3, and having cruised to qualification in Group D and remaining unbeaten throughout the campaign, Didier Deschamps’ side will be confident they can head into the tournament on the back of a comfortable victory.

Five wins and a draw proved to be enough for Les Bleus to finish top of Group D and six points ahead of runners-up Ukraine but France will be keen to return to winning ways before embarking upon their upcoming campaign in Group I where they’ll be mixing it with Norway, Senegal and Iraq.

A disappointing 2-1 loss to Ivory Coast in their previous international friendly put paid to a previously impressive nine-game unbeaten run which included picking up no fewer than eight wins in the process.

Northern Ireland were narrowly pipped by three points by eventual runners-up Slovakia in their qualifying Group A but inconsistency throughout the campaign saw the Irish pick up three wins but also being dealt three defeats as well.

Michael O’Neill’s side have been unable to put any sort of meaningful unbeaten run together despite running out 1-0 winners against Guinea in their previous international friendly as the Irish have managed to capture just three wins from their last eight matches overall.

Home wins during the qualifying phase against Slovakia and Luxembourg were undone by being handed damaging losses against the likes of Germany, Slovakia and Italy respectively, so this upcoming tussle against France is likely to be another bridge too far for Michael O’Neill’s side.

France have overwhelmed Northern Ireland in previous meetings as Les Bleus have recorded 4-0 and 4-1 victories, both of which were in previous editions of the World Cup.
