Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay
Football: World Cup Group H Match Day 1
Monday 15th June 2026 - Kick Off 6pm (EST)
British Time 11pm

Saudi Arabia

In eight years time, Saudi Arabia will be hosting the World Cup Finals and they will be hoping that gives them enough time to put together a development pathway to make the national team more competitive than it has been in recent times. They struggled to Qualify for the World Cup Finals in 2026 and needed to come through a final Group after finishing behind Japan and Australia in the Asian Third Round.

In the Fourth Round, Saudi Arabia benefited by hosting the three games to be played and still needed goal difference to progress ahead of Iraq. The build up to the 2026 World Cup Finals has been anything other than smooth after manager Herve Renard was Sacked and replaced by Georgios Donis and it will be a challenge for Saudi Arabia to make it out of this Group Stage.

Saudi Arabia have won 1 of the last 8 games in all competitions in normal time, while they had lost 4 in a row before a friendly victory over Puerto Rico and then a goalless draw with Senegal. Scoring enough goals to find a way out of this Group is going to be the challenge for Saudi Arabia and the new manager has a tough task in front of him.

Do You Know... Saudi Arabia have only made it out of the Group Stage once at the World Cup and that was in their debut right here in the United States in 1994.

Predicted Line Up: Al-Owais, Abdulhamid, Boushal, Al-Tambakti, Lajami, N Al-Dawsari, Kanno, Al-Juwayr, S Al-Dawsari, Yahya and Al-Buraikan (4-2-3-1)

Uruguay

There is a feeling of transition with this Uruguay squad travelling to the United States for the 2026 World Cup Finals after stalwarts like Luis Suarez missed the plane. Marcelo Bielsa is an experienced manager and there is some talent within this squad, but the challenge will be putting it all together on the big stage.

Qualification was not really much of an issue for Uruguay, although they will have been grateful for a strong start to those Qualifiers before much more inconsistent results and performances in the latter stages. Finishing 10 points behind Argentina in the Qualifying Group perhaps underlines where Uruguay are right now, while the squad will be looking to redeem the 2022 team that were beaten in the Group Stage in Qatar.

Uruguay have not won any of the last 4 friendly games in the preparation for the World Cup Finals, but 3 of those have ended in draws and all have been against teams competing in the Finals this summer. The real test for Uruguay is scoring enough goals and they managed to hit the back of the net more than once in 1 of the last 7 games played.

Do You Know... Uruguay have won the World Cup twice and looking to end a 76 year wait for a third title this summer.

Predicted Line Up: Rochet, Varela, Olivera, Araujo, Gimenez, Valverde, Ugarte, de Arrascaeta, Pellistri, de la Cruz and Nunez (4-2-3-1)

Head to Head

Saudi Arabia and Uruguay met in the 2018 World Cup Group Stage and a first half goal scored by Luis Suarez was enough to separate the teams.

Prior to that, Saudi Arabia had been unbeaten in 2 games against Uruguay and had won one of those.

Prediction

This is a relatively late kick off in Miami, but has the potential of being one of the Group games to be affected by weather delay with potential thunderstorms forecasted.

It is going to be a different challenge for the teams and the managers if that is the case, although Uruguay have more experience of playing in North America and could be more accustomed to the possibility of delays.

A Semi Final run in 2010 and a Quarter Final run in 2018 saw Uruguay return to focus on the World Cup stage, but the 2022 Group Stage exit will be remembered most by the fans.

Marcelo Bielsa's style is going to be challenged in what could be hot and uncomfortable conditions, while the recent inconsistent performances cannot be ignored.

Uruguay should still be stronger than Saudi Arabia, who have arrived in some form of transition having replaced the manager. Four years ago, they did upset South American giants Argentina in the opening Group match, but this Saudi Arabia team have struggled for goals and consistency.

They have shown enough resilience to make things difficult for Uruguay, who have struggled for goals themselves and will be missing the likes of Luis Suarez this summer. Darwin Nunez has been playing limited minutes for his club side and so everything is pointing to a low scoring game where an upset for the Asian Qualifiers is not out of the realms of possibility.

Ultimately Uruguay should be too good, but it may be similar to the narrow win they secured over Saudi Arabia in the 2018 World Cup Group Stage and backing less than three goals to be shared out looks the best approach.
