Mexico made the start they wanted with a professional 2-0 victory over South Africa and now sit top of Group A. Javier Aguirre's side controlled long spells of that match and looked comfortable once they got in front. Another win here would almost certainly secure a place in the knockout rounds with a game to spare.

The hosts have quality throughout the squad, but the biggest positive from the opener was their balance. Edson Álvarez protected the defense well, while Santiago Giménez and Raúl Jiménez gave Mexico a constant threat going forward.
