Cincinnati Reds @ New York Yankees

Preview

The continued struggles of the Cincinnati Reds (35-39) batting lineup meant just five runs were needed by the New York Yankees (46-28) to get back to winning ways. Reinforcements are coming for the Reds with Elly De La Cruz playing in a rehab game on Friday night while his team were losing in the Bronx, but that is not likely to be in time for this series and the Reds need to find some Offensive pushback.

They will be facing Will Warren on Saturday who has a 7-1 record and 3.47 ERA in fourteen starts in 2026 in what is his third season in the Major League. Thirty-three starts were made in his sophomore season, but Will Warren is on course to surpass the nine decision wins earned in 2025 and his ERA is significantly improved.

Will Warren is unbeaten in six starts and he has a 3-0 record in that run, while the New York Yankees have won all of those games. However, there is room for improvement from the relatively young pitcher who has struggled with his command in the opening two starts in June and that has meant having to be pulled out of the game before the end of the 5th Inning.

Five runs have been allowed in a little over 8 Innings thrown and Will Warren would love to be able to get through the batting lineup without racking up the pitch count.

This is going to be the first career start Will Warren is making against the Cincinnati Reds, an inter-League opponent.

The Reds are going to counter with a fourth year pitcher when handing the ball to Andrew Abbott who has a 4-4 record and 3.95 ERA in fifteen starts this season. Last year was a very good one for the pitcher, but his numbers are more in line with the first two seasons in the Major Leagues.

Andrew Abbott is 0-2 with a 3.91 ERA in his last four starts and he had allowed three runs in three consecutive outings before holding the Arizona Diamondbacks to a single run in 5 Innings thrown. The positive for the Cincinnati Reds is that Andrew Abbott has worked his way through 23 Innings in his previous four starts and they will be looking for the pitcher to do the same here at Yankee Stadium.

Two years ago, Andrew Abbott made his sole career start against the New York Yankees and earned the decision after holding the Bronx Bombers to a single run into the 7th Inning.

That win for Andrew Abbott came in the midst of a five game winning run Cincinnati had over the Yankees, but it is New York who have won the last two.

Prediction

You have to expect Andrew Abbott to have success in containing the New York Yankees on current form, but it may not take a lot for the momentum to turn against the pitcher and the Cincinnati Reds.

Pitching well is one thing, but winning games is about putting runs on the board and the Cincinnati Reds have been struggling at the plate.

Will Warren has been a little erratic in recent starts, but he can set things up for the Yankees bullpen and New York could record another relatively comfortable win during this homestand.
