Uruguay

An inquest will already have started back home to work out how Uruguay have found themselves in such a desperate position at the World Cup after playing both Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde. Manager Marcelo Bielsa may have been a big influence on some of the leading coaches in world football, but the Uruguay squad have not really taken to him and the fans are also extremely upset with a man who will be Sacked almost immediately if this team fails to make it out of the Group Stage.

They are clearly not the Uruguay that reached the World Cup Semi Final in 2010 and Quarter Final in 2018, but the two time former Champions would have still expected to breeze through this Group. A lack of goals saw Uruguay eliminated with 4 points in the 2022 World Cup Group Stage, but they are likely in a position where they need at least a draw against the current European Champions to have any hope of making it out of a tournament where eight third place teams progress from the Groups.

Uruguay last won a game of football back in October 2025 and they have now drawn 5 of the last 6 games, including the last 4 in a row. Failing to hold onto a lead against Cape Verde having done everything but score a second goal against Saudi Arabia has increased the frustration of the fans and the watching Luis Suarez.

The manager has tinkered with the personnel and the formation in order to help Uruguay pick up a big result and his approach to this one will be interesting.

Predicted Line Up: Muslera, Varela, Sanabria, Caceras, Olivera, Ugarte, Bentancur, Valverde, Canobbio, Araujo and Nunez (4-3-3)

Spain

A wasteful display against Cape Verde saw Spain begin another World Cup campaign in less than ideal fashion, but the intensity was lifted in the 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia. Four points is almost certainly enough to progress to the Last 32, but Argentina have been confirmed as Group J Winners and that makes topping this Group, or finishing third, the spots to avoid facing the World Champions in the next Round.

No one in Spain will be intimidated in facing any opponent in the Knock Out Rounds, but winning the Group would mean being placed in a spot in the draw that could see the team build up into those bigger meetings. A draw would likely be enough to secure the position as long as Cape Verde do not beat Saudi Arabia by four or more goals, but this is a Spain team that do not play for draws.

Lamine Yamal made his mark on a World Cup Finals that have seen the superstar names all come to the fore in the Group Stage and he remains an influential figure for Spain. Manager Luis de la Fuente will want his team to keep the positive mood going after the thumping win over Saudi Arabia and Spain have impressed with the chances that have been created through the first two matches at the 2026 World Cup.

It was no surprise that following the draw with Cape Verde that the Spanish starting eleven would be tweaked. The squad is getting up to speed now and Luis de la Fuente may not want to make too many changes after the 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia.

Predicted Line Up: Simon, Porro, Cucarella, Cubarsi, Laporte, Rodri, Pedri, Olmo, Yamal, Williams and Oyarzabel (4-3-3)

Head to Head

These two nations have met at the 1950 World Cup and 1990 World Cup- the former was in the final Group Stage that determined the Winner, while the latter was in the opening Group Stage to progress to the Knock Out Rounds.

On both occasions, Uruguay and Spain have drawn, although Spain did win most recently in the 2013 Confederations Cup.

Spain are unbeaten in all 10 previous matches against Uruguay, while they have won 3 in a row to split those matches into 5 wins and 5 draws.

Prediction

The way the Group Stage has played out at the 2026 World Cup suggests three points will be enough to progress as one of the best third place finishers, but Uruguay have given themselves a real challenge to pick up at least one more point.

Failing to beat Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde has left Uruguay in a desperate spot and the knives are being sharpened for Marcelo Bielsa, who has never endeared himself to the fans as hoped.

Now they have to face European Champions Spain who just crushed Saudi Arabia and who are still looking to finish top of this Group and avoid facing Argentina in the next Round. The win over Saudi Arabia has almost certainly secured passage into the Last 32, but Luis de la Fuente will want to avoid facing the defending World Champions so early in the tournament and that means there is some pressure on the team.

A defeat here could spell big problems, but the current form and the performances of these two teams makes it very difficult to imagine Spain losing.

There has been a greater balance in the performances with the team looking pretty good at the back and Spain certainly have more reliable finishers compared with Uruguay.

Luis de la Fuente will have a lot of respect for Marcelo Bielsa and he will be aware that there is quality within the Uruguay ranks that makes them dangerous. At the very least, Uruguay have been tough to beat, but they cannot afford the defensive mistakes that have cost them already within this Group and the South American Qualifiers look much harder to trust compared with the Spanish who are amongst the favourites to win the World Cup.

Conditions could be a challenge for both teams with this game played in the altitude of Guadalajara- the previous matches has seen Uruguay play in Miami twice and Spain play in Atlanta twice.

That could also see players just running out of some steam late in the game and news from the other fixture in the Group may mean that a draw ends up suiting both nations.

You can understand why Spain are favourites on what has been produced by the two teams, but they may not want to risk things late in the game. By the time this fixture kicks off, Uruguay may know the value of a point too and backing the points to be split may look a big price with twenty minutes left of this fixture.

When this game is played, Spain finishing top and Uruguay finishing second or third with three points may work out well for both teams and that could be represented by what is seen on the pitch over the last twenty minutes.

Spain are capable of blowing past any opponent as so many have found out over the last two years, but they just want to finish top and the altitude could just slow down one of the favourites for long enough to help Uruguay get what they possibly need from this fixture.
