A Sports Betting Preview by Stu

Newcastle Knights v Wests Tigers
Rugby League : Australia : NRL 2026
Sunday 28th June 2026 - KO 1605 AEST

Newcastle Knights

The Knights have endured a rollercoaster campaign. Injuries, inconsistency and an inability to close out tight games have prevented them from climbing the ladder, but there have been signs of improvement over the past month. Coach Adam O'Brien has challenged his side to play a more direct style through the middle, and when Newcastle's pack has won the ruck battle, their attack has looked much more dangerous.

Newcastle are 5th on the ladder with a solid record of 9-5 on equal points with the Roosters and Dolphins and ahead of 3 teams just one win behind, a victory here would give the Knights a huge boost to the finals aspirations and they are edging towards a top 4 possibility.

Kalyn Ponga remains the focal point – his form has been irresistible and you don’t need to look any further than Origin 2 where he was electric. Few players in the competition can influence a match quite like the Knights captain. His acceleration through the middle of the field, support play and ability to create opportunities out of broken play make him Newcastle's most dangerous weapon. Alongside him, Fletcher Sharpe continues to develop into an exciting young playmaker, while Jack Cogger has brought stability and organisation to the halves.

Perhaps most importantly, the Knights have traditionally been a much stronger proposition at home. McDonald Jones Stadium remains one of the more difficult road trips in the NRL, particularly when Newcastle start quickly and gets its passionate crowd involved.

Wests Tigers

Under Benji Marshall, Wests have developed a toughness and resilience that has often been missing in previous campaigns. While there have been occasional setbacks, including the heavy defeat to Penrith earlier in the season, their overall body of work has been impressive and leaps ahead of previous seasons.

Wests need this win, they are 10th 7-7 and are just one win outside the top 8, but have a poor for and against so will need a good run to finish this season or the top 8 may slide out of their grasp.

Jarome Luai has transformed the side since arriving at Concord. His competitiveness, game management and leadership have helped lift standards across the squad, while Api Koroisau remains one of the game's smartest dummy-halves. Together they provide the direction and composure that has often been lacking in recent Tigers teams. At fullback, Jahream Bula continues to emerge as one of the competition's most exciting young talents. His ability to inject himself into attacking movements and break tackles has added another dimension to the Tigers attack.

The emergence of Terrell May has also been one of the stories of the season. His work through the middle has consistently given the Tigers momentum, while players such as Fonua Pole and Alex Seyfarth have provided valuable support in the forward rotation.

Odds

Newcastle start as favourites $1.47 to $2.75, the line 6.5 points and total combined points is 50.5

The Betting Verdict

The Newcastle Knights welcome Wests to McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday in a match that could have significant implications for both clubs seasons. For Newcastle, it represents an opportunity to cement their place in the top 8 after a difficult start to 2026, while the Tigers are looking to move back into the top 8 and prove they can consistently perform away from home.

H2H these teams have met 41 times, with Newcastle holding a slim lead 22-19, they have met already this season Wests winning in a big scoreline, 42-22, Wests are on a 2 game winning streak over Newcastle which broke a 7 match run for Newcastle. The venue stats are also fairly close, the Knights win 54% at home with the visitors 10-12 at Mcdonald Jones stadium.

The Knights possess one of the most influential players in the competition in Ponga, and if Newcastle can generate quick ruck speed, he has the ability to completely change a game. The Tigers have occasionally struggled against teams with strong ball-running fullbacks, and Ponga's involvement around the middle of the field could prove decisive.

For Wests, the formula is straightforward. Win the middle through May, Pole and Koroisau, control territory through Luai's kicking game, and force Newcastle into long defensive sets. If they can achieve that, they should create enough opportunities to trouble the Knights. This feels like a contest that could remain within one score for most of the evening. Both teams possess attacking weapons, but both can also become vulnerable when pressure builds.

Ultimately, the Knights having home advantage gives them the edge and experience in key positions may give them the edge in the final quarter. Knights by 4 in a tight, entertaining contest.
