Newcastle Knights
The Knights have quietly turned their season around after a difficult opening two months. Consecutive victories have reignited their finals hopes, with coach Adam O'Brien finding a balance between disciplined defence and a more adventurous attacking approach. Newcastle have become increasingly difficult to beat at home, where the McDonald Jones Stadium crowd continues to provide a significant advantage.
Newcastle are 5th 10-5 record which places them nicely as we head towards the finals.
Up front, Jacob Saifiti continues to lead the middle rotation, while Tyson Frizell provides invaluable experience and leadership off the interchange. Kiwi, Phoenix Crossland has also enjoyed another outstanding campaign, constantly keeping defenders honest with his speed around the ruck and relentless defensive workload.
The concern for Newcastle is the absence of Kalyn Ponga and Bradman Best who are selected for Origin 3, placing additional responsibility on Brown and Sharpe to generate points against one of the competition's best defensive outfits.
Redcliffe Dolphins
Few teams enter Round 18 with more momentum than the Dolphins. After winning 8 in a row including quality victories over, Cowboys, Storm and Roosters the Dolphins turned it on last week in a very tight victory over the Warrior to win by 2 points 26-24. This weeks team though is heavily weakened losing 5 players to Origin selection and their star half Isaiya Katoa,to a broken wrist, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Jack Bostock, Max Plath, Selwyn Cobbo, Thomas Flegler.
Despite several Origin-related absences, the Dolphins continue to produce quality performances thanks to their outstanding depth. Jeremy Marshall-King has been instrumental through the middle, while Morgan Knowles has added toughness and consistency since arriving at the club.
Redcliffe are third on 24 competition points 10-5 record the same as their rival this week Newcastle.
With Isaiya Katoa unavailable, Bradley Schneider steps into the halfback role alongside the experienced Kodi Nikorima. While Schneider lacks Katoa's polish, Nikorima's creativity and ability to attack broken defensive lines should help ease that transition. Herbie Farnworth remains the focal point in the backline and has arguably been the competition's best centre throughout 2026.
The Dolphins greatest strength continues to be their ability to score from anywhere. Whether through structured attack, quick shifts to the edges or broken-play opportunities, they constantly ask questions of opposition defences.
Odds
The Dolphins are just ahead in the betting, $2.05 to $1.80, the line 2.5 points and total points is 52.5
The Betting Verdict
The Newcastle Knights return home to McDonald Jones Stadium for one of the marquee clashes of Round 18, hosting a Dolphins side that has quickly established itself as one of the NRL's genuine premiership threats. Both teams arrive in excellent form, making this a fascinating battle between Newcastle's revitalised confidence and the Dolphins explosive attacking football.
Newcastle have rediscovered their confidence over the past month. Their defence has improved dramatically, they've won four of their past five matches, and Brown has given them exactly the organisational halfback they've lacked for several seasons. Playing at McDonald Jones Stadium only strengthens their chances.
Newcastle are also far less affected by Origin 3 selection only losing 2 players versus the Dolphins 5 and promising for Knights fans, the Knights have won their last five games against the Dolphins. That is tempered somewhat by the fact the Knights have won only three of their last 17 games without Kalyn Ponga.
These teams have met just 6 times and Newcastle have certainly had the edge to date leading the H2H 5-1. This is the first meeting this season, last season they met twice, Newcastle winning both, 26-12 and 20-26. Newcastle are 53% winners at home and Redcliffe have won 1 from 3 at Mcdonald Jones Stadium.
The Dolphins have scored over 35 points per game in their eight-game winning streak. Their system under Kristian Woolf has become remarkably resilient. Even without some representative stars, they continue to dominate field position, generate quick ruck speed and create opportunities through disciplined football. Their recent victory over the Warriors demonstrated they can match it with the competition's elite sides.
The line of -2.5 is certainly appealing, but with Newcastle's outstanding home form and the absence of several representative players across both sides, the safer investment is taking the total combined points under 52.5. The Dolphins superior attacking depth and defensive consistency make them the narrow choice.
The disruption to both sides will be significant and for that reason, both teams attack will likely lack cohesion. As for the winner, Newcastle without Ponga are usually fairly poor, Dolphins by 6.
