Portugal had to come from behind to see off Croatia in their previous round of 32 tie after Ivan Perisic had given Croatia a 1-0 lead, but the Portuguese revival was almost scuppered had it not been for a controversial VAR decision.

Croatia thought they had scored a last-gasp equaliser but the goal was ruled out and Portugal made it through to the round of 16 by the skin of their teeth; nevertheless, Selecao are now unbeaten in each of their last nine matches across all competitions consisting of six wins along with three draws.

Roberto Martinez’s side had earlier finished runners-up behind Colombia in Group K at the end of the group stage and had remained unbeaten with a resounding 5-0 win over Uzbekistan along with gaining points in draws with DR Congo and Colombia respectively.

Spain

Spain continued their momentum with a third win on the trot after recording a comprehensive 3-0 win against Austria in the round of 32 which followed back-to-back wins in the group stage against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in 4-0 and 1-0 victories respectively in Group H.

A 0-0 draw in their opening group match with Cape Verde makes it four matches without conceding a goal for La Roja and as well as Spain’s defence being very tough to breach, Luis De La Fuente’s side are also gathering momentum going forward.

The Spaniards are also in solid form as they are now unbeaten in each of their last 14 internationals consisting of 10 wins along with being involved in four draws, and indeed, the possibility of a draw being played out in normal time at the AT&T Stadium cannot be ruled out between these two footballing nations.

The draw has featured prominently in previous meetings between Portugal and Spain as six of the last seven encounters have resulted in stalemate and this upcoming clash may be no exception with so much riding on it for both sides.
