South Sydney Rabbitohs v Newcastle Knights
Rugby League : Australia : NRL 2026
Sunday 12th July 2026 - KO 1805 AEST

South Sydney Rabbitohs

The Rabbitohs have endured an up-and-down campaign, but their best football has been exceptional and their worst, diabolical. Wayne Bennett has gradually rebuilt South Sydney into a side capable of troubling the competition's elite, particularly when playing at home.

Their attack remains one of the most dangerous in the NRL, averaging close to 30 points per game, but defensive lapses have prevented them from climbing higher on the ladder.

Its make or break for the Rabbits who are slowly slipping down the table, currently they are 8th, 8-7 with all 3 byes used, meaning no breaks from here until the end of the season.

There are, however, significant changes heading into this contest. Cody Walker is unavailable through suspension after his brain explosion sin-bin against Penrith, forcing Bennett to reshuffle his spine. Matt Dufty comes into the side at fullback, Campbell Graham returns from injury, and Jayden Sullivan is expected to assume greater playmaking responsibility.

While Walker's absence removes one of South Sydney's most creative players, Graham's return strengthens both the attack and defence out wide.

The Rabbitohs greatest strength remains their forward pack. Keaon Koloamatangi continues to produce representative-quality football, Brandon Smith provides enormous work rate through the middle, and Tatola has developed into one of the competition's most improved front-rowers.

If South Sydney win the ruck, they generate quick play-the-balls that allow their outside backs to flourish.

Newcastle Knights

The Knights arrive with a huge amount of confidence at its highest point of the season. Adam O'Brien's side has won three straight matches, but perhaps more impressively, they've rediscovered the defensive resilience that has long been the foundation of Newcastle's success but has been absent for many seasons now.

None of those victories were convincing blowouts, but good teams consistently find ways to win close games, and that's exactly what the Knights have done.

Newcastle are 4th with a great record of 11-5 and are still to have their last bye, they are on equal points with Sydney and New Zealand and 2 wins shy of the table topping Panthers.

The biggest reason for Newcastle's resurgence has been the arrival of Dylan Brown. Since joining the club, Brown has transformed the Knights attack with his running game, composure and ability to create opportunities on both sides of the field. His partnership with Fletcher Sharpe continues to improve, while Phoenix Crossland remains one of the hardest-working dummy-halves in the competition.

Kalyn Ponga should be able to back up barring injury, but if not, Sharpe has embraced the responsibility at fullback and continues to impress with his speed and support play.

Up front, Tyson Frizell's leadership has been invaluable, while Jacob Saifiti suffered a hamstring injury last weekend and joins his brother Daniel on the sidelines. Young forward Cody Hopwood again retains his place after several encouraging performances.

Newcastle's greatest improvement has come defensively. During their winning streak they've consistently frustrated opponents, forcing errors through line speed and disciplined contact. If they can repeat that effort against South Sydney's dangerous attack, they'll give themselves every opportunity to extend their run.

Odds

The Bookies can’t split them here, $1.91 to $1.91, the line +2.5 points to Newcastle and total points is 48.5

The Betting Verdict

The South Sydney Rabbitohs return to Accor Stadium on Sunday afternoon desperate to keep their finals hopes alive when they face an in-form Newcastle Knights outfit that has quietly become one of the NRL's toughest teams to beat. The Knights have strung together three consecutive victories, while South Sydney are looking to rebound after a disappointing loss to Penrith. With both clubs in the top eight, this shapes as one of the most important matches of Round 19.

Newcastle have won three consecutive matches, but all have been tight contests decided by a combined margin of just nine points. While that demonstrates resilience, it also suggests the Knights haven't completely dominated quality opposition. Their attack has improved, but it still lacks the explosiveness of some of the competition's leading sides.

H2H is close, Souths trail 17-19 from the 36 matches played. Newcastle have won the past 4 matches between these clubs and have played once already this season producing an incredible 80 combined points, 42-38. Souths are 57% winners at home while the Knights are 16-16 at Accor.

The loss of Cody Walker is significant. He has been the Rabbitohs chief creator all season, and without him much of the responsibility falls on Jayden Sullivan to organise the attack. However, Campbell Graham's return restores class to the backline, while Bennett-coached teams have traditionally responded well after disappointing defeats.

If Koloamatangi and Moale can dominate possession, South Sydney could create enough opportunities for Campbell Graham to trouble Newcastle's edges. Conversely, if Frizell and Crossland slow the ruck and allow Dylan Brown to control field position, the Knights have every chance of grinding out another close victory.

One statistic is particularly interesting. The first meeting between these clubs this season produced 80 points, but both teams have tightened considerably in defence since then. With finals implications growing and both coaches favouring structured football, this contest feels far more likely to become an arm wrestle than another shootout.

While Newcastle's recent form deserves respect, South Sydney's unpredictability at Accor Stadium could provide an upset. However, I feel like the Knights recent dominance over Souths and current good form gives them the edge.

Prediction: Newcastle by 4.
