At the end of this campaign, ten years will have passed since Inverness CT last played in the Scottish Premiership, but they have returned to the Championship after ending the 2025/26 season as League One Champions. They have been able to retain the services of a couple of key loanees who have been given permission to spend another year with Inverness CT, but this may be a campaign of consolidation back at this level.

They begin by returning to action in the League Cup Group Stage and Inverness CT have been eliminated at this Stage in eight of the last nine seasons. That includes three straight Group Stage eliminations, but Inverness CT may believe this section offers them an opportunity even as a third Seed.

Inverness CT will know that two of the teams in this section are going to be a challenge, but they begin the Group Stage by taking on East Fife of League One. These are two teams that met in that Division last season and Inverness CT won both home games very convincingly to make it 6 straight victories over this opponent.

Consolidating their place in League One would be seen as a successful season for East Fife and finishing 8th last year proved to be the best League finish since 2021.

East Fife concluded last season with a single win in 12 games in all competitions, while they have lost 7 of the last 10 away fixtures played. This is a team that have also picked up positive away results in the last couple of League Cup Group Stages when facing the lower Seeds in the section, although East Fife have suffered heavy defeats at St Johnstone and Kilmarnock.

Friendly matches have already been played by Inverness CT and they did conclude the last campaign with 3 wins in 4 matches played. They began pre-season friendlies at the end of June before Scotland were officially eliminated from the World Cup and it should mean Inverness CT are perhaps far enough along in their build up to the new season to make a very positive start on Saturday.

Familiarity with the opponent will help before bigger tests both in this Group and in the Scottish Championship once the domestic season begins.

Prediction

The League Cup Group Stage does allow teams to build up their competitive rhythm, but it can also be a tough time for players as they try and get up to speed.

Inverness CT will have to play well to get the better of Greenock Morton and St Johnstone, but they should be comfortable in facing an East Fife that shared the same Division as them last season.

Both games hosted by Inverness CT ended in comfortable home wins and that looks likely to be the case on Saturday.
