New Zealand Warriors
Despite an injury-hit campaign, the Warriors continue to find answers. James Fisher-Harris returns to anchor the forward pack alongside co-captain Mitchell Barnett, while Wayde Egan remains one of the competition's premier hookers, constantly controlling the tempo through clever service and outstanding defensive work. With Luke Metcalf and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad still working their way back, Chanel Harris-Tavita and Te Maire Martin will again steer the side around the park, a combination that has quietly developed excellent chemistry over recent weeks.
The Warriors will play in this years finals series, their depth shows that clearly. Currently the Warriors are 2nd, 11-5 record and 2 wins behind the Panthers but there is a large group of chasing teams within 2 wins of the Warriors all the way down to 8th position.
Out wide, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak provides experience, while Alofiana Khan-Pereira continues to enjoy an outstanding first season in Warriors colours. His finishing ability has added another dimension to New Zealand's attack, and if the Warriors generate quick play-the-balls through the middle, expect him to see plenty of opportunities on the edges.
Perhaps the Warriors greatest strength has been their defence. They rarely concede easy metres, scramble exceptionally well when under pressure and have become experts at strangling opponents through field position. At Go Media Stadium, where they have lost very few matches over the past two seasons, they have developed one of the strongest home-ground advantages in the competition.
St George Illawarra Dragons
The Dragons make the trip across the Tasman facing one of the toughest assignments in the NRL. While there have been signs of improvement throughout the season, consistency continues to elude Shane Flanagan's side. They remain capable of competing for long periods, but defensive lapses and an inability to convert pressure into points have left the Dragons dead last with just 2 victories from 16 matches played this season and with that, absolutely no chance of a finals berth.
Clinton Gutherson has been one of the club's standout performers since arriving, bringing leadership, composure and experience to the backfield. His support play and organisational skills have lifted those around him, while Valentine Holmes remains the Dragons biggest attacking threat. Holmes powerful running game and elite goal-kicking ensure St George can remain competitive even when opportunities are limited.
Kyle Flanagan and Daniel Atkinson will again shoulder the responsibility in the halves. Both possess solid kicking games, but against the Warriors aggressive defensive line they'll need to produce their best football to create scoring chances. The Dragons forward pack, led by Toby Couchman, Ryan Couchman and Damien Cook, will need to match the Warriors physically through the middle. If they lose that battle early, they risk spending long periods defending inside their own half.
Odds
The visiting Cowboys will start as slight favourites, $1.12 to $6.00, the line is 16.5 points and combined points 46.5
The Betting Verdict
The New Zealand Warriors return to Go Media Stadium on Saturday evening knowing they have an opportunity to further cement their place among the NRL's premiership contenders when they host the St George Illawarra Dragons. On paper, this appears one of the more one-sided fixtures of Round 20, but Andrew Webster will be well aware that complacency is the quickest way to undo a strong season. The Warriors have built their success on consistency, discipline and relentless defensive pressure, and they'll be expected to deliver another professional performance in front of what should be another passionate Auckland crowd.
H2H the Warriors have a surprisingly poor record against the Dragons, 15-25 but have managed to win the past 3 matches, the most recent earlier this season where the Warriors won easily at Jubilee stadium 12-30.
They are playing at home, welcome back James Fisher-Harris, possess one of the competition's best defensive records and face a Dragons side that has struggled to consistently challenge the league's elite. The Warriors ability to dominate possession through Barnett, Fisher-Harris and Egan should allow Harris-Tavita and Martin to dictate field position and patiently build pressure.
For the Dragons to cause an upset, they must complete exceptionally well, minimise errors and somehow prevent the Warriors from controlling the ruck. Gutherson and Holmes will need to produce moments of individual brilliance because sustained attacking opportunities may be difficult to come by.
One area worth watching is the Warriors new-look halves pairing. While Harris-Tavita and Martin have performed admirably, they haven't played extensive football together. If the Dragons can apply early defensive pressure, they may force a few handling errors or disrupt the Warriors rhythm.
Ultimately, though, New Zealand simply have too many advantages. Their forward pack is superior, their defence is considerably stronger, and the atmosphere at Go Media Stadium has become one of the most intimidating in the NRL. The Dragons have competed bravely throughout the season, but this looks like a difficult matchup against a side with genuine premiership aspirations.
