Preview

Defending the American League Pennant was always going to be a tough task for the Toronto Blue Jays (47-56), but they would still have entered the season expecting to earn a return to the Playoff. Instead, the Blue Jays have slumped to the basement of the American League East and they are also 6 games out of the Wild Card spots, which makes this a huge series for Toronto on the road.

They did snap a losing run to salvage a win at the Tampa Bay Rays, but that does mean another series defeat for the Blue Jays. With the trade deadline coming up, the team needs to show the management that there is still some life in them or else there could be plenty of movement out of the club.

Playing at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox (52-49) feels like a real 'prove it' moment for the Blue Jays and they can take inspiration by the recent form produced by the Red Sox. After looking like they would be failing to have any impact on this season in the manner expected, Boston won fourteen games in a row to move into one of the Wild Card spots in the American League.

The winning run was snapped when losing the second of a double-header with the Baltimore Orioles, but the Red Sox have shown what they can do and they will be a 'buying' team at the trade deadline.

Boston will be looking to get back on track immediately by handing the ball to Patrick Sandoval who has a 0-0 record and 4.82 ERA in two starts made for the Red Sox this season. He has missed significant time through injury, but Sandoval is looking to show the Red Sox what he can offer to try and strengthen what has been an up and down starting pitching rotation for much of the year.

Patrick Sandoval did not factor into the decision last time out, but lasted 5 Innings and gave up four earned runs against the Tampa Bay Rays. He has a 0-0 record in two previous appearances against the Toronto Blue Jays, but Sandoval does have a 6.00 ERA in those.

The Toronto Blue Jays will counter by handing the ball to Trey Yesavage who has a 4-5 record and 3.78 ERA in fifteen starts in 2026 having had limited experience last season. However, it was the performances in the post-season that really caught the eye and Yesavage is having a few more issues this season now that there is plenty more tape for opponents to study.

Trey Yesavage had been unbeaten in four starts to close out June, but has a 0-2 record and 5.93 ERA in three July starts.

However, the Blue Jays can take confidence from the fact that Yesavage has thrown almost 14 Innings against the Boston Red Sox in two starts this season and allowed just three runs. All of those came in the second start, but the Blue Jays still won both games and Toronto have won the last five games between these American League East rivals.

Prediction

There has not been one aspect of the Toronto performances that have led to this disappointing season, to date at least, but they need to find something quickly.

The pitching, fielding and batting have all contributed negatively to the record, but Trey Yesavage may be able to do enough on the mound to give the Blue Jays a chance of the upset.

Patrick Sandoval is still going to be vulnerable having spent so much time away from the Major League, while the Boston Red Sox winning run is over and that can have a hangover effect for a couple of games.

It also should be noted that the Blue Jays have dominated this Divisional rivalry this season and Toronto may just be able to do enough to earn the upset on the road.
