They are still trying to find a way to move past the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East and a 3 game gap coming up to the end of July is far from insurmountable. However, the New York Yankees (59-46) will be wondering when their luck will change in terms of injuries in what has been a season where they have missed big names too often.

The starting pitching rotation is getting healthier, but it is the batting lineup that has now been hit hard by the injury bug. Both Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge have been missing for several weeks, but the Yankees had to place Cody Bellinger on the sidelines and will be hoping his hamstring issue is not one that is going to cause problems for too long.

It does put some pressure on Max Fried who will be starting for the second time since returning from a stint on the injury list of his own. Max Fried will be facing the Chicago White Sox (55-49) who continue to be the surprise leaders in the American League Central and who are 2.5 games clear of the Cleveland Guardians after the results on Sunday.

The pitcher has a 4-3 record and 2.97 ERA in eleven starts this season and Max Fried kept the Pittsburgh Pirates scoreless in 5 Innings thrown in his first start since mid-May. He, and the Yankees, will be happy with the level shown and Max Fried is facing a Chicago White Sox team that he held to a single run in 7 Innings thrown when last facing them in 2025.

The White Sox are countering by handing the ball to rookie Noah Schultz who has a 3-7 record and 6.04 ERA in twelve starts made this season. Chicago have been struggling for some consistency over the last week, but the bats were alive on Sunday when scoring twelve runs in a win over the Houston Astros and the rookie would love to receive that kind of support.

Noah Schultz has been involved in the decision in each of the last six starts, but has a 1-5 record and a 7.24 ERA in that time. He failed to make it through 4 Innings in his last start when allowing five runs to the Texas Rangers, but Schultz will take confidence from giving up a single run in 5 Innings thrown in his last home start against the Athletics, which was also the only decision win earned from the last six starts.

The Yankees took the opening two games in a three game series in the Bronx last month, but the Chicago White Sox were able to salvage the last of those played.

Prediction

You do have to wonder who is going to step up for the New York Yankees with some of the big names out of the batting lineup, but they should be able to get after the White Sox rookie on the mound.

Confidence can be taken from expecting another strong outing from Max Fried and the Yankees may win the opener of this series between two American League teams hoping to be playing beyond the conclusion of the regular season.
