It is trade deadline day in the Major League and that means there is plenty of uncertainty all around as teams scramble to make trades that will either have an impact in October or in the 2027 season.

One big trade has already been executed by the New York Yankees (63-49), but the team will be returning home after a recent road trip knowing there is more work being done behind the scenes. For many Yankees players, that should not have an impact on how they prepare for the opener of this inter-League series, but the fans will be taking a keen interest as to how New York have constructed their roster in a bid to end a long wait for a World Series.

The Yankees are 2.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East, but looking like a strong Wild Card team out of the League. They are hosting the St Louis Cardinals (55-57) who have slipped below 0.500 after losing two of three games against the Toronto Blue Jays and who have perhaps gone as far as possible in the 2026 season.

St Louis are still only 4 games out of the Wild Card spots in the National League, but they have work to do as they hand the ball to Michael McGreevy. The third year pitcher has a 4-9 record, despite a 3.57 ERA, from twenty-one starts this season and Michael McGreevy has shown the Cardinals he can be an important starting pitcher for a number of years to come.

Michael McGreevy had been on a decent run from the end of June until mid-July, but he has allowed eleven runs in his last two starts and absorbed consecutive decision losses. Last time out, McGreevy did not get out of the 2nd Inning against the Chicago Cubs, while he has a struggled to avoid defeats in recent starts thanks to a struggling St Louis batting lineup.

The Yankees will counter through Cam Schlittler who has a 10-6 record and 2.04 ERA in twenty-three starts.

Cam Schlittler put together a solid July and had given the New York Yankees every chance to win in his last start when holding the Chicago White Sox scoreless into the 7th Inning. The bullpen blew that game and prevented Schlittler from securing another win, but New York have to be happy with the recent level both of this sophomore pitcher and the overall starting rotation.

Last season, the Yankees swept a three game series on the road against the St Louis Cardinals.

Prediction

A new face has arrived to try and give the New York Yankees batting lineup a bit of a jolt as they continue to wait for big names to return.

It may take a bit of time for things to click and both starting pitchers are performing with enough confidence to believe they can help prevent this game from surpassing the total number set.
