Arsenal
It may not have been a flashy transfer window, at least not to this point, but Arsenal have added quality to the squad that won the Premier League title. The Champions will be clear favourites to retain the title with so much uncertainty around the main domestic rivals, but Mikel Arteta will be reminding his players about what happened to Liverpool's title defence in the last campaign and urging them to remain focused and hungry.
Losing the Champions League Final will likely have given Arsenal plenty of motivation on the return to pre-season training, although it was a long season for so many of the players who also represented national teams at the World Cup Finals. Unlike Liverpool, who had looked stodgy in the second half of the season that ended with the title, Arsenal had the second best record in the Division in the second half and they will get to open the new campaign at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal scored within seconds in the Community Shield last Sunday and they never looked back in a 3-0 win over rivals Manchester City in Cardiff. The side have not lost any of the last 9 games in all competitions in normal time with the exception being the Penalty Shoot Out defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League Final. Arsenal concluded the last campaign having won 4 in a row at the Emirates Stadium in all competitions.
Ezri Konsa looks like he will be joining Arsenal from Aston Villa, but his debut may come at Villa Park in the second game of the season. Jurrien Timber and William Saliba are set to miss out, but an otherwise full squad is available. However, those who returned late from World Cup duty may have to wait a little longer to be involved from the start.
Coventry City
The club had spent thirty-four consecutive seasons in the English top flight between 1967 and 2001, but Coventry City have had a tough twenty-five years since relegation from the Premier League. Financial problems meant they were not even able to play in Coventry for a little while, while they had slipped into the fourth tier of English Football as recently as 2017, but the big time is returning to this part of the West Midlands.
In recent years, Coventry City have reached the Championship Play Off Final and Semi Final, but Frank Lampard was appointed in November 2024 and the entire club have been moving in a positive direction since then. The manager guided The Sky Blues away from the relegation zone and into the Play Offs in 2025, but carried the momentum forward to help Coventry City win the title last season and they do look pretty well placed to replicate the likes of Sunderland and Leeds United and avoid an immediate relegation.
Coventry City reached the FA Cup Semi Final in 2024 when they fought back from 3-0 down to force Penalties against Manchester United, although they ultimately came up short. That will have given them a taste of facing the biggest English clubs, but the challenge for Coventry City will be trying to bridge the gap week after week and the side will begin the season unbeaten in 8 games, albeit at the Championship level.
Top scorer from last season, Haji Wright, is set to miss out until November. Jack Rudoni, Frank Onyeka and Ephron Mason-Clark are all hoping to be involved, while a number of the summer signings will be keen to make full debuts.
Head to Head
Arsenal have hosted Coventry City in Cup competitions in 2012 and 2014 and have won both very comfortably, but these two clubs will be meeting in a League fixture for the first time since 2000/01.
Arsenal beat Coventry City at Highbury in September 2000 and they have won 7 successive home games against The Sky Blues in all competitions.
Prediction
The opening Friday of the English Premier League season will once again feature the Champions hosting as Liverpool did twelve months ago against Bournemouth.
This time the honour goes to Arsenal and they have a squad that looks like it will make a much better fist at retaining the Premier League title than Liverpool managed to do.
The additions have strengthened the options and Mikel Arteta will be hoping his squad have a bit better fortune with injuries, especially in the attacking areas. All are available for the opening fixture, although Arsenal are missing key defenders in Jurrien Timber and William Saliba.
They are also hosting a Coventry City team that won the Championship last season and a club that have been waiting a quarter of a century to return to the top flight. No matter what happens over the next nine months, Coventry City fans will appreciate that they were a fourth tier club less than a decade ago and they will be firmly behind the team.
Frank Lampard has plenty of Premier League experience as both a player and a manager and that could be important, but this is a very tough opening game.
Last season, Arsenal were very good defensively against all teams in the Division, but they really contained the three Promoted clubs when they visited the Emirates Stadium. That includes a thumping 5-0 win over Leeds United in the first home game of the season and backing The Gunners to pick up the opening three points of the campaign with a clean sheet looks the approach to take.
