There is still a belief that the American League Central will be sending two teams into the post-season, but the Divisional Winner is the only one guaranteed of a spot. After being swept by the New York Mets, the Cleveland Guardians (57-59) have fallen a couple of games below 0.500 for the first time this season and failed to capitalise on the slips of current Divisional leaders Chicago White Sox (59-55).

Both were active at the trade deadline, but both teams have lost three in a row, which means the White Sox are still 3 games ahead of the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central. The Minnesota Twins sit between these two rivals, but the focus for the Guardians and White Sox is on one another this weekend as they begin a three game set in Chicago.

Six games remain against one another and each of those is going to be very important- the White Sox have won four of the seven played this season, including two in a row last month to split a four game series hosted by Cleveland over the Independence Day Weekend.

Joey Bart picked up an injury for the White Sox having only arrived here earlier this week and both teams need to pick themselves up after late losses in the last games played.

Chicago will give the ball to Noah Schultz in the opener on Friday and the rookie has a 3-8 record and 5.82 ERA in fourteen appearances this season. Thirteen of those have been in starts, and Noah Schultz will be looking to build on his first outing in August when he restricted the Tampa Bay Rays to a single run in 5 Innings thrown having replaced an opener and pitching from the 2nd Inning through to the end of the 6th Inning.

Prior to that, Noah Schultz had been struggling with a 1-6 record and 8.15 ERA in nine starts for the White Sox and returning to that role is going to be a test.

Parker Messick made seven starts in his rookie season, but has already posted twenty-two in 2026 and has an 8-6 record and 2.57 ERA, which will have given the Cleveland Guardians a huge amount of encouragement.

After a rough start to close out June, Parker Messick has shown his confidence level by putting together a 1-1 record and 1.57 ERA in the last five starts. Prediction

This feels like a really important series, even with several weeks of the regular season to play, and that is certainly the case for the Cleveland Guardians.

They have to find a way to win at least two of the three games against the Chicago White Sox this weekend and that builds pressure.

Both teams have struggled into this series with three game losing runs, but the Cleveland Guardians do have an edge on the starter mound and have to take advantage of that. Parker Messick continues to give the team every chance to win and the Guardians could get after Noah Schultz, who has been struggling in the starter role in his rookie season before the strong relief outing last time out.
