Lyon

They may have won the French title for the first time in 2002, but that sparked a glorious era for Lyon who won seven straight titles and who reached the Quarter Final of the Champions League three times during that period of domestic dominance. They have since reached the Semi Final in 2010 and 2020, but recent times have been more challenging for the club as a whole.

Since that Semi Final run in the Champions League in 2020, Lyon have only played in the Europa League and have missed out on any European Football three times. However, Lyon have been back in the Europa League in each of the last two campaigns and have managed to work through to the Quarter Final and Last 16, but they are 2-1 behind after the First Leg of this Champions League Third Qualifying Round tie and that means they have work to do.

Lyon were ahead in Prague in the First Leg, but the defeat means the team have suffered 3 losses in a row in all competitions. There is still a few more days to go before Lyon return to domestic action, but all of the focus right now is on the Champions League and the side had won 3 in a row at home before concluding last season with a 0-4 defeat to Lens.

Mads Bistrup, Pavel Sulc and Khalis Merah are all set to miss out.

Sparta Prague

Since the split of Czechoslovakia, Sparta Prague have still been the club that have picked up most titles in the Czechia top flight, although the two year grip of the trophy has been loosened by rivals Slavia Prague. It is Slavia Prague who are the double defending Champions this season, but Sparta Prague's early focus is on returning to the Champions League Group Stage having taken part in it two years ago.

Last season Sparta Prague won three Qualifying Rounds of the Conference League to earn a spot in the League Phase of that competition and they were eventually beaten in the Last 16 by AZ Alkmaar. Home form was important for Sparta Prague, but they did earn a couple of away wins in the League Phase of the Conference League, albeit at a lower level than the one they are facing in this tie.

Sparta Prague were beaten at Mlada Boleslav in the Czech First League this past weekend and that means they have opened the season with 2 wins and 2 defeats in all competitions. Both losses have been away from home and Sparta Prague have been beaten in 5 of the last 8 games played on their travels in all competitions going back to the second half of last season.

A number of changes were made to the starting eleven for the League game this past weekend knowing the importance of the Second Leg of this Champions League Qualifier.

Prediction

Sparta Prague scored twice in a seven minute spell in the second half last week to turn things around in this Champions League Third Qualifying Round tie, but Lyon will be kicking themselves for missing a Penalty in-between the two goals conceded.

It may have changed the course of the First Leg and Lyon are going to be under some pressure to respond.

The challenge becomes that much tougher knowing that Sparta Prague have already begun the domestic campaign and so could be a little sharper, but Lyon will not be allowed to make too many excuses.

Six years ago, Lyon reached the Champions League Semi Final and they have been desperate to return to this competition since then. A couple of solid Europa League runs is a reminder of what Lyon can do, and they will certainly feel they have the experience and qualities to beat a Sparta Prague team that were playing in the Conference League last season.

They scored first last week and Lyon will certainly hope the home crowd can push them into a fast start this time around.

Sparta Prague have been more vulnerable when travelling and that may also show up in this Second Leg with Lyon expected to have enough in the final third to eventually get past the Czech representatives.
