Both of these teams made the Playoffs last year and they were batting pretty well with the runs scored backing that up- it has been a different story in 2026 with the New York Yankees (66-52) struggling with injuries impacting the batting lineup, while the Seattle Mariners (58-63) are in a season long slump that threatens their hopes of returning to the post-season.

They meet in this series out in the American League looking to find some consistency at the plate, although it does feel like the Yankees are having to tread water until the likes of Cody Bellinger, Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge can return. There is a hope that all will be available before the conclusion of the regular season and give them time to find their rhythm before the Playoffs begin.

Chasing down the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East is looking tougher and tougher for the Yankees who are now 6 games behind them. However, they are looking good for the top spot in the Wild Card race and that is largely down to the starting pitching rotation coming together and helping New York win games in a very different way than fans, and rivals, are used to seeing.

It is also a big series for the Seattle Mariners who are now 4.5 games behind the Houston Astros in the American League West. That gap is only slightly wider than the one Seattle are seeing in the Wild Card race with the team 4 games behind rivals Texas Rangers who currently occupy the last of those positions.

The Mariners travel across the country looking for a big series and they will give the ball to Bryan Woo to open things up.

The young pitcher had a really strong second and third year as a Major League starter, but Bryan Woo has suffered a setback in 2026 and comes into this game with an 8-8 record and 4.31 ERA from twenty-two starts. The last two seasons have both ended with Woo putting a sub-3.00 ERA on the board and the Mariners will need a strong conclusion to this season from this starter to help them fight back towards a Playoff spot.

Bryan Woo concluded July with a 0-2 record and a 6.43 ERA from four starts, but the opener in August saw him keep the Detroit Tigers off the scoreboard in 7 completed Innings to pick up the decision win.

He does have a 2-1 record and 2.73 ERA from five career starts against the New York Yankees and only gave up two runs when pitching into the 8th Inning in his last start in the Bronx last season.

The Yankees will counter with an in-form Ryan Weathers who is trying to hold onto one of the spots in the starting rotation.

In his last five starts since the last decision loss, Ryan Weathers has a 2-0 record and a 2.20 ERA and four of those opponents have failed to score more than a single run against him.

There has been a real struggle at the plate when the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners have taken to the field and that should be music to the ears of the two starting pitchers.

Both Bryan Woo and Ryan Weathers have opened August with strong outings, but the latter has been in more consistent form either side of the All Star Break.

Ryan Weathers can help the New York Yankees, who have also shown a bit more ability to scrap and win games even when not firing at full tilt. That has not been the case for the Seattle Mariners who have lost four in a row and the Yankees can begin this series with a victory.
