The Chicago Cubs look clear for one of the National League Wild Card spots, but the Arizona Diamondbacks (64-57) are one of three teams chasing two spots that share the same record. They dropped the second of this series against National League West rivals Colorado Rockies (47-73), but the Diamondbacks will be looking to recover immediately.

Arizona will have Merrill Kelly going to the mound and the veteran has an 8-9 record and 4.88 ERA in twenty-one starts in 2026. He is a long time Arizona Diamondback with a brief stop with the Texas Rangers last year, but Kelly has struggled to reach the same kind of consistency that he produced in 2025.

There have been better signs since the beginning of July and Merrill Kelly has put together a 3-1 record and 2.82 ERA across seven starts. He allowed five runs in the first start made in August, but Kelly is pitching with confidence right now and bounced back to hold the Los Angeles Dodgers to a single run into the 6th Inning last time out.

Earlier this season, Merrill Kelly threw a Complete Game against the Colorado Rockies when holding them to a single run on the road. That outing has continued the recent dominance Kelly has had over this opponent and that will give the Diamondbacks plenty of belief ahead of this latest game.

They are going to be facing Ryan Feltner who will be going to the mound for the Colorado Rockies with a 4-6 record and 5.71 ERA in seventeen starts made this season.

Recent starts have been pretty difficult for Ryan Feltner and he has a 1-4 record in his last four starts, while carrying a 9.39 ERA. Even the game in which he recorded a decision win ended with Feltner allowing four runs in his time on the mound, but the Rockies batting lineup were able to make up for that against the Kansas City Royals.

Ryan Feltner has not faced the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2026, but he did only allow a single run when last going up against them in 2024.

However, that is some time ago now and this Diamondbacks team have found a way to get the better of the struggling Rockies more often than not this season.

Prediction

A disappointing defeat on Tuesday will have just refocused the Arizona Diamondbacks and they do have a pitcher heading to the mound who has been in decent form over the last six weeks.

Merrill Kelly can largely restrict the Colorado Rockies and that should allow the Arizona batting lineup to make the plays needed to record a relatively comfortable win over this opponent for the second time in three days.
