Hull City
New ownership will always come in with new ambitions and Hull City were taken over in January 2022 by Acun Medya after fans had become very disillusioned with the Allam family. During that ownership, Hull City had played in the Premier League for three seasons, but the latter years under the Allam family had seen Hull City drop into League One and struggle in the Championship.
Acun Ilicali is the name to remember as the owner of the club and he immediately announced that there were big ambitions to be met, but even someone with ambition will have been surprised by the Hull City progress. In two of the three seasons completed under this ownership, The Tigers had not finished higher than 15th and they had only avoided relegation at the end of the 2025 season on goal difference.
All of that changed last season as Hull City scrambled into the Play Off positions and then upset both Millwall and Middlesbrough to make their return to the Premier League. Hull City concluded the last campaign with a single loss from the last 7 games in all competitions, while they also lost 1 of the last 7 at the MKM Stadium.
Eleven signings have been made since the conclusion of last season and Hull City will be hoping they can gel the squad together as well as the likes of Nottingham Forest and Sunderland have done in recent seasons.
Manchester United
Some would have been surprised to see Manchester United finish in 3rd place in the Premier League table last season after Sacking Ruben Amorim in January and replacing him with Michael Carrick. The interim tag has been removed for Carrick, but Manchester United will have different challenges to face in 2026/27 as they return to the Champions League.
Last season, Manchester United suffered immediate exits in both the League Cup and FA Cup and that meant the relatively small squad was not stretched by having to play a lot of football. It will have helped in finishing in the top four, but big expectations remain around a club that have now gone thirteen years without winning the Premier League title and eighteen since the last Champions League.
Manchester United have had a mixed pre-season in terms of results, but they are unbeaten in 6 Premier League games since the home defeat to rivals Leeds United, while 5 of those have ended in victory. The side have played 10 away Premier League games in this calendar year and Manchester United have only suffered a single defeat, although only 4 ended in maximum points.
Manuel Ugarte suffered a serious injury at the World Cup and will miss the remainder of the calendar year, while both Matthijs de Ligt and Benjamin Sesko have only just returned to training and so are unlikely to be involved. Mason Mount is set to miss out.
Head to Head
These two clubs last met in the 2016/17 season and Manchester United took four points from Hull City in the Premier League and also beat them in the League Cup Semi Final 3-2 on aggregate.
However, the last meeting hosted by Hull City saw them win the Second Leg of that League Cup tie 2-1.
Hull City have hosted Manchester United 5 times in League matches between 2008 and 2016 and they have lost 4 of those with the exception being a draw.
Prediction
Something interesting to note ahead of the new Premier League season is that three of the last five Championship Play Off Winners have actually survived in the top flight in the following season.
In most cases they would have been short odds to return to the Championship, but the likes of Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Sunderland have managed to find a way to consolidate when moving up a Division.
Despite that, Hull City do look to have a big gap to bridge- last season they finished 6th in the Championship, but the data numbers suggested they should have finished in the bottom three and that means they are starting at a lower position than most who have been promoted.
Instead of those three clubs mentioned, Hull City may be more in line with Luton Town and Southampton who struggled after winning the Play Off Final.
They have invested plenty of money in the transfer window and Hull City are going to be backed by a loud atmosphere on the return to the top flight, which makes dangerous. That is especially the case early in the season when the excitement has yet to be cooled if poorer results have been put together and Hull City will certainly relish facing Manchester United.
Michael Carrick's options may not have been bolstered as much as fans, and perhaps the manager, may have hoped, but Manchester United have an experienced team and plenty of players who will feel they can push on in the 2026/27 season.
The attacking options should make the difference in a fixture like this one and Manchester United created very strong chances when visiting promoted clubs Leeds United and Burnley last season. They were also far too good for Wolves, who eventually were relegated, although it should also be noted that all of those fixtures were played under either Ruben Amorim or caretaker Darren Fletcher.
There remain questions of the Manchester United defence and they were certainly much more effective and confident at Old Trafford compared with the away games played under the guidance of Michael Carrick.
Weathering the early storm has to be something Manchester United are prepared to do and, if they can do that, it should set up the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes to show their qualities in the final third to lead this club to an opening victory.
Manchester United have not won the first away Premier League game of the season since the behind closed doors 2020/21 season, and the last time they did that with supporters inside the ground was back in August 2017. That is a pressure to deal with, but Manchester United should have enough in the final third at both ends of the pitch to get the better of this Hull City team.
