Preview
They won the series with the San Francisco Giants, but the Cleveland Guardians (62-66) are looking to find a way to pick up some really strong momentum. The Guardians are only 4.5 games out of the Divisional lead in the American League Central, while a game out of the Wild Card spots and that is staggering when you think Cleveland have not won consecutive games since July 21st.
An opportunity to do that comes about on Friday when the Guardians begin an inter-League series against the Colorado Rockies (50-77) who have just been swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The season cannot end quickly enough for the Rockies, but they will use the remaining five weeks of the season to take a look at the whole roster.
On Friday they will hand the ball to Tanner Gordon who has a 0-3 record and 5.55 ERA in seventeen appearances this season. This game will represent the sixth start of 2026 having made fifteen last season and this is the first time Tanner Gordon will be starting since early July.
Recent appearances have come out of the bullpen, but Tanner Gordon has been asked to act as a long reliever at times and his performances have been pretty good. In his last start in July, Gordon allowed a single run in 5 Innings thrown against the San Francisco Giants and that is something he can take into this outing.
An increasingly desperate Cleveland Guardians team will turn to Joey Cantillo who has a 9-7 record and 3.80 ERA in his twenty-six starts for the team in his third year in the Major Leagues.
Joey Cantillo suffered back to back decision defeats last month and he will have accepted that his own level was not good enough, but he has bounced back in the right way. The last four starts may have produced a 1-1 record, but Joey Cantillo has a 2.25 ERA, although that is over a small sample size of Innings.
The reason for that is Joey Cantillo had to withdraw after a single Inning had been thrown against the Chicago White Sox earlier this month, but it was a precautionary withdrawal. Last time out, Cantillo gave up a single run in 6 Innings thrown against the San Diego Padres and he will be confident in helping the Cleveland Guardians who took two from three against the Colorado Rockies last year.
Prediction
The consistent inconsistency of the Cleveland Guardians is just holding them back, but they are in a position to push for a Wild Card place in the post-season even if they cannot pull back the Chicago White Sox in the American League Central.
However, the Guardians have not had consecutive wins since July 21st and they cannot afford to continue that kind of run for much longer.
Cleveland should have the edge on the starter mound against the Colorado Rockies, although you have to give Tanner Gordon a lot of credit for his recent levels produced.
Ultimately, the Rockies bullpen may not be able to build on any start given and the Guardians can win this opener of a three game inter-League set.
